Advantages: Excellent special effects by Les Bowie

Disadvantages: none

THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT was made by the Hammer studio in 1955. it stars Brian Donlevy as Professor Bernard Quatermass, of the British Rocket Group. Quatermass sends the first manned rocket into space with three astronauts on board. When the rocket comes back to Earth two of the astronauts have disappeared, leaving only the one named Victor Carroon, played by Richard Wordsworth.

Carroon has been taken over by an alien organism which gradually transforms him into a murdering monster. The army is sent out to destroy this creature but only succeeds when Quatermass makes them electrocute it by using the entire force of Battersea Power Station! There are appearances in this film by both a young Jane Asher and a young Thora Hird!

The film is an adaptation of a BBC television series first broadcast in 1953, written by Nigel Kneale. It was first shown on the big screen on 26 August 1955, but the title was changed for release in America, to THE CREEPING UNKNOWN. In the 1990s there were rumours of a remake of the film, with a script written by Dan O’Bannon, but nothing has as yet come to fruition.

Good point - I didn't even notice that I didn't include that bit! Yes, I did enjoy it, it gave me some goosebumps but that is probably a latent memory from when I first saw it as a child!
