... win a load of money for the homeless kids back in New York. The film focuses too much on the back story in the early parts, and while it shows the progression of fighting skills, it dawdles too much on this and leaves not enough time for actual fighting. What we see of the fighting skills is impressive. The inclusion of a world wide invitation gives us a chance to see a range of different styles, from sumo to capoeira, kung fu to boxing, and the various styles within each. It showcases these talents, and uses acto...more

Premium Review The Quest (DVD): On a Quest to find something worth watching, maybe? (482 words)

Many people will tell you that Jean-Claude Van Damme has never made a good film in his life. Sure, he has made some howlers, but the one thing that remains impressive throughout his films, as far as I am concerned, is the level of fight choreography. I really was expecting the worst when I put this DVD into my player. Van Damme's movie output post -1995 tends to be a little sketchy and low in quality, but I was pleasantly surprised. Part of the reason this movie isn't too bad is that its period-set. 1920's America and the Orient are used to good effect. Van-Damme - here as director as well as writing the 'story' does admirably to tell the tale efficiently. The plot concerns a competition between the greatest fighters from around the world who gather in the 'Lost City' where they do battle. And thats it really. Van Damme manages to direct the action well, concentrating on the fight ...  Read the complete review

Ever see a video in the store, read the back of it and think, “Wow, that sounds just like a great movie I saw when I was young”? That’s what happened to me when I saw the Quest unfortunately. You see I’m a bit of a softy when it comes to martial arts movies…….to put it in short, I LOVE them. That’s why this movie sounded so good. Starring Jean Claude Van Damme and Roger Moore, the movie describes itself as “ One mans search for his soul that leads to the ultimate journey “ By the end of the movie I was attempting to take my own life with the video box. Ok firstly can I just say that if ...  Read the complete review
