The Right Stuff is an adaptation of the book by Tom Wolfe, released originally in 1983. Although winning 4 Academy Awards it has been unfairly overlooked by many people just as a dull, toys for the boys biopic. When you compare Apollo 13 to this film, there is no contest. As gripping as that film was this is a far superior effort on a much broader scale This film tells the story of the Mercury astronauts ( Shepard, Carpenter, Glenn etc ) through the beginnings of the sound barrier challenges to the beginning of the Apollo missions not in an balls out gung ho fashion but in a quietly understated intelligent way. The Right Stuff is one of my favourite films and proudly sits in my DVD collection and not just because it represents excellent value for money due to it being over 3 hours long. The film splits nicely into 2 parts (which the BBC usually take advantage of when they show it over successive nights). The first part being the story of the Test Pilots of the X-Planes in post war western America. The second part is the story of the Mercury 7, America’s first Astronaughts. The Right Stuff is one of those movies which I can see over and over again and not tire of it. The intro, describing the sound barrier as a "demon that lived in the air," not only sets the tone of the movie of man overcoming the challenges placed before him but also is one of the most memorable I've ever seen. Director Philip Kaufman does an excellent job recreating the sense of awe of the era associated with manned space flight as well as the heroic spirit of the astronauts and test pilots. Sam Shepard is terrific as the legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager (be sure to look out for the real Chuck Yeager playing a bartender in Pancho's). ... Read the complete review

My DVD collection is now hitting the hundred mark, and what better way to make my century than with the widescreen version of the Right Stuff. Tom Wolfe's book is probably my most read, borrowed, and well-thumbed paperback. Drop it casually onto a table and it falls open at every page. The Right Stuff is all the more astonishing because it's not just based on the truth, it really is the truth. The movie captures the spirit of the book, which captures the spirit of the age and the righteous spirit of the Mercury astronauts. I vividly remember watching the broadcast of one of the Apollo rockets take off on our black and white telly, at the same time ... Read the complete review
