The Ringer (DVD) ... DVD released 24 July, 2006 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / Johnny Knoxville (Jackass, A Dirty Shame) stars as a man who pretends to be mentally challenged so he can fix the Special Olympics. This morally dubious premise (the movie goes to great lengths to be sure you understand how appalling it is) is not as inflammatory as it could be--The Ringer is careful not to mock its mentally challenged characters. This is sometimes a source of strength, as some of the funniest jokes come from the perspective of the athletes--for example, a group of the other athletes recognize that Steve (Knoxville) is not the high-functioning mentally disabled guy he pretends to be, but they go along with the masquerade and even help Steve because they can't stand the snotty reigning champion. But this respectfulness also makes the movie feel cautious and inhibited (one imagines there's a wealth of un-PC jokes that got cut out of the script so it could pass muster with the Special Olympics, who gave the movie its blessing). As a result, the movie's real plot turns out to be a love story, as Steve falls for one of the Special Olympics volunteers (Katherine Heigl, Romy and Michelle: In the Beginning) and has to find sneaky ways to undermine her slimy boyfriend. All in all, an uneven comedy with occasional flashes of wicked wit. Also featuring the always-welcome Brian Cox (Adaptation, X-Men 2).--Bret Fetzer

Crowned Review The Ringer (DVD): Farrelly Brothers lite is kinda alright! (1087 words)

No doubt inspired in part by the shock events of the 2000 Paralympic games, where it turned out that the supposedly ‘intellectually’ challenged members of the Spanish basketball team included students, a lawyer and an accountant amongst them and were anything but disabled, the Ringer is Johnny Knoxville’s crude and non PC comedy based around his characters attempts to get into the special olympics by faking a disability. Knoxville, once of the stupid stunt show Jackass, is now trying to become a serious actor, well serious acting wise, he still concentrates on comedy roles (Dukes of Hazzard) where the knockabout style he perfected on Jackass can still be ...

Premium Review Bad Script, Bad Acting - A Wasted Oppurtunity (751 words)

Imagine for a moment that you are an up and coming Hollywood star. You are known for your comedic persona and are finally being offered leading roles rather than the part of the best friend or adversary. Maybe you are Jack Black and decide to star in the excellent ‘School of Rock’, or maybe you are Ben Stiller and you see yourself in the genre defining ‘There’s Something About Mary’, or maybe you are Johnny Knoxville and the idea or pretending to be a special needs athlete to rig the Special Olympics in ‘The Ringer’, appeals to you? If you choose ‘The Ringer’, you lose. Why? That’s what I would say to Knoxville, why? It is not that the film is particular ...

Premium Review The Ringer (DVD): What kind of man would fix the Special Olympics?! (870 words)

As soon as I saw this DVD advertised on TV I knew I had to watch it so was pleased when my boyfriend bought it for me for my birthday. I don't usually like Johnny Knoxville but the film looked funny so thought I would give it a go and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the film would be quite 'close to the mark' and a bit politically incorrect from watching the adverts and reading the back of the case but it actually wasn't. The basic plot of the film is that Steve (Knoxville) hires his friend Stavi (Luis Avalos) as his gardener as he feels sorry for him but Stavi unfortunately catches his hand in the Lawnmower and slices off 3 of his fingers. He ...
