Advantages: Catchy Song's And So Bad It's Good Acting.
Disadvantages: The Sequel Is A Let Down.
With it's "Singalong-A-Song" soundtrack and amazing casting the rocky horror show is a timeless classic that no self respecting movie lover should miss!.
If you've not yet seen this movie then i suggest you do as it says on the tin and "Give Yourself Over To Absolute Pleasure" then get swept up into the whirlwind experience that is the rocky horror picture show.
Before watching this you've got to remember however that this movie was produced in 1975 and was based on the still popular today stageplay that was written by Richard O Brien and first performed in 1973 in londons west end, the stageplay becoming so popular that the movie cross was inevitable.
The screenplay however was co-written between both O Brien and Jim Sharman but still features all of the original music written by O Brien himself, the movie also features a lot of the original cast members such as the amazing Tim Curry (Dr Frank N Furter), Patricia Quinn (Magenta), Little Nell (Columbia), Jonathan Adams (Dr Everett Scott*) as well as O Brien himself (Riff Raff).
Excellently narrated in places through the eyes of a criminologist (Charles Gray) looking back on the events, the movie takes place in a small town called Denton where we are first introduced to two of the main characters, our hero and heroine of the tale Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) whom are present at the wedding of freinds and our intro song see's Brad letting Janet know how much he is in love with her and the opening scene ending in a proposal.
Being the "Straight Edge" ordinary decent members of the public that they are Brad and Janet decide that they must go and inform thier old tutor and mentor Dr Scott of their good news and so our journey into the depths of Rocky Horror begins as any good B-movie should... car trouble.
This leads our two pals to find a phone to call for help, and they are in the middle of nowhere but wait "Theres A Light Over At The Frankenstien Place" the song suddenly rings out as our hero and heroine find solace in the fact that they have found (what they believe to be) their *ahem* light at the end of the tunnel.
This is where we first gain an insight into what the Rocky Horror actually is, a low budget musical based on the old b-movies that O Brien loves, we also see O Brien for the first time as his Igor esque butler character Riff Raff our first encounter with a "Transylvanian".
Invited in by our eerie butler it becomes clear that the master of the house is throwing a party as O Brien bursts into song with the classic "Time Warp" (you know it, don't deny it) and we see the rest of the Transylvanians, a wild glam and rowdy bunch!, much to the dismay of our two pals as they are less than "with the times" so to speak.
This is where we meet Dr Frank N Furter whom is played magnificently by Tim Curry and you'll soon fall in love with him despite the fact he's supposed to be the villain in this movie.
And all this is in the first 10 minutes of the movie, if i go on anymore i will spoil the experience for you and this is something that i would never want to do as The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of the greatest movie experiences of all time and it is certainly a movie you will never forget.
The songs that O Brien penned are toe-tappingly catchy and you'll soon be singing along to all of them as you watch this movie again for the 10th, 11th and 12th time, and laugh at the cheesy one liners and dodgy acting that is so bad that you can't help but think it's good.
If you can imagine the illigitamate offspring of Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" and Randal Kleiser's "Grease" then your almost there in terms of how this movie plays out and if you reckon you would appreciate a cross between them the you should most definately grab a copy of this movie and watch it!, if you don't like the sound you should still give Rocky Horror a chance as it is a classic piece of cinema that once you watch it you will appreciate what it is and why O Brien wrote it, this is most definately a movie about sexual liberation but it is cunningly disguised in there amongst the grander scheme of things.
There is a cameo in here too by Meatloaf as a loveable rogue delivery boy "Eddie" and of course we get a song from the man with the massive lungs!.
I don't own this particular copy of the DVD so i cant really comment on what extras there are, however if you buy the two disc special anniversary edition that i have then you'll be greeted by an awesome animated interactive DVD menu that was actually nominated for an award and you'll be greeted with extras such as outtakes and deleted / alternative scenes plus karaoke style singalong tracks (that you will put on and sing too!).
This in my opinion is one of the greatest movies of all time and is only let down by the fact that the sequel was garbage and not even worth a mention, if you watch this movie and don't love it the first time then watch it again and you'll understand it a little better.... you'll soon be singing it's songs and it's praises.
*= Adams was originally the narrator but switched roles in the movie.
Summary: A Timeless Classic, Loved The World Over By Those Old And Young, A Must See !!!
