Advantages: An amazing script set around the TV

Disadvantages: Not one!

It is hard to believe that this series was created back in the 90's!

The Royle Family is brilliant TV, it is brilliant because, well.....not much happens.

The action takes place on the whole in Jim and Barbara's living room, it occasionally too, strays into the kitchen!

The first six episodes are all primarily concerned with Denise and Dave's wedding plans. Denise is getting married in six weeks time...and there is still so much to do, but at least the hairdresser is booked...Sandra Beswick 'she calls herself Sandy scissors now...but I still call her Sandra' says a Denise who really wants her mam to organise everything for her.

We meet the important and central characters to the series in season one. Jim and Barbara...married for over 20 years 'and never a cross word'.

Denise and Dave - the laziest daughter a family could hope for and her future husband - who 'broke the ice' with Barbara by volunteering to move a broken chair to the tip.

Anthony - the school drop out son, who is permanently persecuted by his dad.

Nana - who had a fall in the shopping precinct that is still spoken about to this day.

Mary, Joe and Cheryl from next door - Cheryl suffers with weight issues...

Twiggy - He can get you anything you need knock off ya know.

Where this series is really brilliant is the admission of additional characters that we don't meet. We hear about Dave's mum and dad, Gary, who smells of mince, leggings Lorraine...who has just got sterilised and of course Beverly Mackka... least said there.

There are lots of things that remind me of my childhood in this series. The 'secret cupboard' with chocolate biscuits in for a start, and the chops and chips with beans...a real childhood favourite for me!

This is comedy at its best and what makes it so real is the heart touching moments that spread throughout the series. Just watch Dave and Jim on the day of the wedding...it is great...just great.

The series just get better and better as the years progress and the two recent Christmas specials are brilliantly complimented by the initial episodes.

This is a must.

Summary: Some of the best British comedy ever written
