From when I saw this film advertised on television it interested me, with the likes of Queen Latifia, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys I thought somehow it must be an amazing movie with some great music in it, probably even from these three. However the film was nothing of the sort, here's my review. --------------- The Plot ---------------- The film follows Lily a 14 year old girl and her nanny Rosaleen get away from Lily's cruel father. The film is based in the middle of the civil rights movement and Rosaleen finds herself in trouble with some locals so her and Lily take off to a town in South Carolina. In South Carolina they ... I recently went to see this film at the cinema due to the fact that there was nothing else on that appealed to both myself and my friend. I don't think it has really been given much advertising as I have not seen one trailer on TV for it nor many posters in the cinema - the only reason we spotted it was on was because we went online to look for film times! Written by Sue Monk Kidd and Gina Prince-Bythewood and also directed by Gina Price-Bythewood this film is currently showing in UK cinemas and is rated 12. The plot: The film is set in South Carolina in 1964 where 14yr old Lily Owens lives with her father Ray and her carer ... Read the complete review

Just bought this from amazon on DVD for under £7, and it is definitley worth the money! ~The story~ The film is about 14 year ols Lilly (dakota Fanning) who at four years old, accidently shoots her mother, as her mother tries to leave her father and Lilly picks up the fathers gun. (It is set in 1964) The next 10 years of Lilys life are spent unloved and rejected by her father. She then decides to run away with Rosaleen her black house keeper. The story tells of the terribly racist area and the treatment they recieve at the time. Rosaleen and Lilly ask to stay with three black sisters who make honey. THe story tells of the ups and downs of the time whil ... Read the complete review

A young girl runs away with her housekeeper from her abusive father and tries to solve the secrets that surround her late mother. During her search, she is taken in by the strong-willed, brave Boatwright sisters and there, she learns...well... the title should give it away..."The Secret Life of Bees." The noticeably outstanding aspect of this film is the acting. Alicia Keys, who is relatively new to acting in front of cameras, pulls off a sensational performance, nothing short of what Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Dakota Fanning and Sophie Okonedo manage to achieve. The brilliant actress' abilities make the emotional scenes work and make this a lot more ... Read the complete review

Watched this film this morning. I read the book a few months ago and thought it was a gentle - but interesting read. I felt that the subject matter of it would transfer very well to film - and it was with this thought that I sat down to watch the film with my teenage daughter. Being a bit bookish, I generally prefer the book to the film - but this film was very true to the book and the spirt of the book. The casting was spot on with the characters fitting very well into my perception of them. It's great to watch a film with full, rounded black women characters. It's great to watch a film with a strong but subtly done theme of the civil rights ... Read the complete review
