The Simpsons - The Complete Season 1 (DVD) ... released 24 September, 2001 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Animated, Box set, Full Screen, PAL / From practically the first episode, broadcast in 1989, The Simpsons impacted on planet TV like a giant multi-coloured meteor. With a claim to being the defining pop cultural phenomenon of the 1990s--hip, fast, sharp and primary--there was nothing even in rock & roll to match this. The Simpsons is possibly the greatest sitcom ever made. Although the animation was initially primitive, never before had cartoon characters been so well drawn. There had been loveable middle-aged layabouts on TV before, but Homer Simpson successfully stole their crown and out-slobbed them all in every department ("The guys at the plant are gonna have a field day with this," he grumbles in "Call of The Simpsons" as he watches scientists on a TV news item who can't decide whether he is incredibly dense or a brilliant beast). However, in this first series he isn't quite yet the bloated man-child he would become in later series; instead he's a growling patriarch with a Walter Matthau-type voice. His sensible half Marge's croak, meanwhile, has yet to settle down, while the vast cast of minor Springfield characters have yet to find their place. Bart, however, was a smash from the start: dumb as Homer but spiky-haired and resourceful, he sets out his manifesto in "Bart the Genius"; while "Moaning Lisa" spotlights his over-achieving sister and is a good early example of the series' clever handling of melancholy bass notes. Throughout its life there's always been confusion as to whether The Simpsons is a show for kids or adults, but with allusions in these first 13 episodes to Kubrick, Diane Arbus, Citizen Kane and (in a very satisfyingly anti-French episode) Manon des Sources, it should already have been clear that this was a programme for all ages and all IQs from 0 to 200. Dysfunctional they may have been, but the Simpsons stuck together, and audiences stuck with them into the 21st century. --David Stubbs On the DVD: The packaging is good but the 13 episodes are spread very thinly here, with just five each on discs one and two . The commentary track is intermittently interesting though a tad repetitive, as creator David Groening is joined by various other members of the team. The third disc has some neat extra stuff, including outtakes, the original Tracey Ullman Show shorts and a five-minute BBC documentary, but is again fairly brief. The menu interfaces are pretty clunky, annoyingly forcing you to watch endless copyright warnings after each episode and with no facility to "play all". The content is wonderful, of course, but three discs looks like overkill. --Mark Walker

... of satire: 'the use of wit to attack the injustice in society'. At last, this definition comes in handy, in describing The Simpsons. Each episode is 20 minutes long, and follows some sort of adventure for one of the family. The clever thing with the Simpsons is that it's genuinely funny, and young audiences can enjoy it just for the fun, but there's something for adults of all intellects too. The best thing about the show is there is something for everyone: as a kid I loved Bart, and looked up to him for his cheeki...more

Premium Review The Simpsons - The Complete Season 1 (DVD): Where it all began (671 words)

The Simpsons is one of the if not THE most revolutionary shows on TV, its hard to believe that its first official full episode aired in the United States 19 years ago this month ( In fact there were short episodes running on the Tracy Ullman show since 1987 which would technically make the simpsons 21 years old !! ) I am a self confessed Simpsons nut and have been when I first started watching the show on Sky One in the early 90's , yes some of the later episodes and seasons have lost their way a little and don't have some of the sharp humour that was displayed in the first 7 or 8 seasons, but its still one of the best shows on TV today and the show that ...  Read the complete review

“The Simpsons” series one was released on DVD on 25 September 2001. It is the region one version I have so all comments relate to that version. The first series is only 13 episodes long as Fox TV weren’t sure how it would be received. There were concerns that the audience would switch off so the studio were not willing to take a gamble on a longer series, they must be regretting that decision now! Although it is revealed later on in the discs that Fox commissioned $10m for this series and that they were committed to this even though they had not seen a single episode. This was obviously a huge gamble especially when a generation had not ...  Read the complete review

After 2000's release of seasons one and two of animated series 'The Simpsons' on video, it was pretty much inevitable that a DVD release would eventually follow. The boxset is currently available to buy on DVD in regions 1, 2 and 4. Essentially, the content is identical between the three versions, though oddly the price is not - the region 1 and 4 releases are considerably cheaper than the spectacularly elevated £40 RRP asked for the region 2 release. The region 2 and 4 versions are presented in a PAL video format, where the region 1 release is presented in NTSC. In this opinion, I have reviewed the region 1 release, but where differences have been ...  Read the complete review

Since the advent of dvd users have been calling for the release of certain title over everything else. Little by little they are coming with next weeks release of The Godfather films, the first entry for a star wars film and of course now we see the release of The Simpsons Season 1 on dvd but is it worth the wait. Well here's my view on the three-disc set. The release comes in silver grey gatefold style packaging with some nice artwork. This slips into a metallic case with great artwork again and an almost rainbow effect on it. Overall a nice start with the addition of a small booklet listing the episodes, some trivia and air dates. Spanning three ...  Read the complete review

My Opinion: I have purchased region 1 Simpsons box set, but don't worry, this is the exact same as region 2. "The Simpson's DVD Box Set" would make a fabulous gift for any Simpsons lover, as it is wonderfully boxed, and has 13 full episodes from the first season, plus lots on interesting extras. Contents: This DVD box set is wonderfully boxed. There are as total of 3 discs, which all have some episodes, and some extras. There are a total of 13 episodes, all from the very first season. This DVD has 5.1 digital sound and excellent quality in picture. Below are the separate contents of each disk, and a ...  Read the complete review
