Advantages: funny

Disadvantages: animation is a bit rough

Watching this first series of The Simpsons, it's hard not to cringe at how basic some of the animation work is. No, it's certainly a show that got better with age, and a lot of this series looks and feels a bit amateurish to be honest, but that doesn't mean there isn't something to be gain from watching it.

The Simpsons is an animated sit-com from the USA that follows the residents of fictional Springfield, in particular Bart, Maggie, Lisa, Homer and Marge (the Simpson family).

The only definition I remember from my A Levels in the definition of satire: 'the use of wit to attack the injustice in society'. At last, this definition comes in handy, in describing The Simpsons. Each episode is 20 minutes long, and follows some sort of adventure for one of the family. The clever thing with the Simpsons is that it's genuinely funny, and young audiences can enjoy it just for the fun, but there's something for adults of all intellects too.

The best thing about the show is there is something for everyone: as a kid I loved Bart, and looked up to him for his cheekiness. Now, as an adult and a father to boot, I relate to Homer more and more, and that's the true beauty of the show - everyone can get something out of it!

Like all good main-stream animations, there is a subtle mix of adult humour in the show, but it isn't sexual, it's often political. As the show is based in the US, there are some things that require you to know about American politics and culture to really understand, but a lot of it is easy to relate to in our modern society, and this is where the popularity of the show comes from.

The best episode in season one has to be 'The Crepes of Wrath'. In this episode, Bart goes to France as an exchange student. In return, the Simpsons get an Albanian student who is spying on Homer's nuclear work; it's great. I mean, talk about a storyline that isn't politically correct! Still, it's hilarious stuff and it just can't be faulted!

Summary: do it
