Plot: Tibby, Lena, Bridget and Carmen have been best friends ever since their mums were pregnant together in antenatal classes, and ever since they have been the best of friends, and family to each other. Although they're all such different characters nothing gets in the way of their friendship. Bridget is the sporty one, she is into boys and football. Carmen is the "geeky" one, she doesn't care much for her looks or been popular, and is the product of a broken home (her mum and dad are divorced). Lena is the shy, quiet one who keeps herself to herself, and finally Tibby is the "weird" one, the film maker who is "out there" and lives by her own rules.
When school comes to an end, the 4 friends find themselves separated over the summer while they each have their own things to do. While Bridget is off to football camp, Carmen is staying with her father (and his new fiancee who she knows nothing about!), Lena is off to Greece to stay with her grand parents, and Tibby is staying in town to shoot some film footage.
But before they all split up for the summer months, they come across a pair of jeans in a second hand shop, which magically fit all of them perfectly dispite them all been completely different shapes and sizes. They decide they are destined to keep these pants, and that they will send them to each other for a week each at a time, in all their locations, and write a letter telling the next person an amazing thing that has happened to them while wearing the pants.
But everything is not what they think, and they soon realise that a pair of old jeans, though may magically fit them all, cannot make their lives better, and cannot stop bad things from happening to them.
Opinion:
I watched this film because I started liking the actress Alexis Bledel when I watched The Gilmore Girls series, and found her to be a good actress, so thought I'd watch this film (as it seemed like my kind of kiddy/teeny film which I can watch when wanting something easy going!). I was expecting something very different than what I got. The film is actually a little deeper than I first imagined, I thought it would be a lot more "kiddy" than it actually is, but some of the issues raised by the film are actually quite deep and moving, and are quite "grown up", after watching it, I wouldn't give it to a kid to watch really, not that it's not appropriate, but more that it's more of a young adult film, I'd say from 13 to 21 would enjoy this film the most. It covers some real issues which teenagers go through, the girls in the film are somewhere between 16 and 18 (to be honest I'm not 100% sure!) and so girls of that age do go through these kinds of issues which I won't mention as I don't want to ruin the film for anybody! But in my close group of friends at school (who actually remind me of the girls in this film!) we pretty much went through what the girls in this film go through between us. So it goes to show the story is very true to life and believeable.
There is also a sequel to this film, in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, so if you do enjoy this film, then I suggest you watch that too!
I can't really think of any other films like this one to compare it to, but if you are a teenage girl, you'll love it, if you're not a teenage girl but tend to like teenage girls films...then you'll love it! If you like horror/sci-fi/thriller films only, you'll hate it, if you only like action films, you'll hate it. It's a typically girly film! Well worth a watch!
Summary: A great teenage film :)
