Advantages: Fabulous songs
Disadvantages: Very long
When someone mentions Julie Andrews, the first thing that always comes to my mind is The Sound of Music.
I remember watching this when I was a little girl, and thinking it was soooo long, but sticking with it, because the songs were soooo good!
Well, it's 20 years down the line, and I don't think my opinions have changed too much at all!
The Sounds of Music is a classic musical, set in Austria at the start of the war. It stars Julie Andrews as the main character, a student nun who is sent to look after a huge family of children after their mother dies, and ends up falling in love with the children and their father, despite having a very shaky start with him.
Obviously the story is interspersed with fabulous, unforgettable songs, including the title track '(The Hills Are Alive With) The Sound of Music, Eidleweis, Do-Rae-Me and So Long, Farewell.
In my opinion, these are what make the film, and Julie Andrews, along with the children in the family really make them something special.
This Collectors Edition double DVD set was brought out for the 40th Anniversary of the musical.
The only thing that slightly ruined the film for me as a child, and, although not such a problem now, still worth mentioning, is the length of the film. The running time is longer than most musicals, and it feels as though the film should finish a lot earlier than it does. It gets to a point when the story seems to ramble on slightly, after passing a couple of perfect points to finish.
However, in my opinion, a fabulous musical, one of the best ever made. This is certainly due to Julie Andrews in part, who plays her role as the naive young nun exceptionally well, as does Christopher Plummer, as the intimitading but loving Captain Von Trapp.
This musical is a classic, loved by both children and adults for the past 40 years, and will be for years to come!
Summary: A fabulous film, Julie Andrews at her best
