The Sweetest Thing
Released: 2002, Run time: 88 minutes, Genre: Romantic Comedy
This review is for the film only, not the DVD as it was watched via netflix.
The needy, self help reading Jane (Selma Blair) has been dumped again and her only possible cure is to go out drinking and dancing with her best gal pals, single girl by choice, Courtney (Christina Applegate) and the heart breaking player Christina (Cameron Diaz). A cheeky bum pinch introduces Christina to the devilishly handsome Peter (Thomas Jane) a guy from out of town, here for just one night on a bachelor party. Could this chance encounter be Christina's only chance at true love?
Armed with the location his brother's wedding, follow the ups and downs of the open road as Christina and Courtney drive across the country to track Peter down. Meanwhile, back home, Jane has man troubles of her own....
This film has some of the best cast female leads for a romantic comedy. The chemistry between Cameron Diaz, Selma Blair and Christina Applegate is what makes this film so enjoyable. As with most romantic comedies this film explores the eternal question of 'what is true love and how do we know when we've found it?' but for me this film was more about friendship. The dialogue between the three girls was excellently written by Nancy M. Pimental, she really captures the affectionate mick-taking that occurs between close friends. I particularly liked the use of 'in-jokes' and the use of songs (Do you like Pina Coladas?) to show the bond between the girls.
I liked that Christina and Courtney were strong independent women with high powered jobs, flashy dress sense and a filthy sense of humour. Perhaps some of the scenes were far fetched, particularly the scene in the launderette and the 'sing-along' in the restaurant but I think the aim was to demonstrate the silly things girls do together and for me, the film did this well. It got me reminiscing of times with my girlfriends.
Overall I would recommend this film to those who like romantic comedies as this is one of the best I have seen. Perfect for girlie nights in but not one you would want to watch with your mum as it's a bit rude in places. It's a silly, over the top exploration of friendship, love and 'playing the field' but it's enjoyable and will have you laughing as well as cringing.
(this is my first film review-comments would be really appreciated)
Summary: One of the best rom-coms I've seen and I will be re-watching it!
