Ned Merill is swimming in a friend's pool when he looks out across the neighbouring properties and decides to swim across the county via the swimming pools of his various neighbours to his home where his wife and two daughters await him. Along the way he meets various friends and acquaintances as well as some people who are barely civil to him and some who are blatantly rude to his face. Merill also comes across some young and mature women who he seems to be on more than friendly terms with. As he progresses across the county he gets more and more tired and more and more confused.
