The Tailor Of Panama (DVD) ... Geoffrey Rush ... / DVD released 10 May, 2004 at Uca Catalogue / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / The sly conceit at the heart of The Tailor of Panama is that tailors are the secret-keepers of the power elite: customise fine apparel for the rich and powerful, and you'll hear things only whispered in the halls of government. The film was co-adapted by John le Carré from his own novel, and directed by John Boorman with a delicious spin on the traditions of the spy genre. Pierce Brosnan qualifies as James Bond's black-sheep sibling as British MI6 agent Andy Osnard, viewing women only in terms of sexual conquest and conducting spy business by his own flexible set of rules. Banished to Panama to pay for recent indiscretions, Andy connects with Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), a British ex-convict who's built a lucrative cover as tailor to Panama's highest officials. With the coveted Panama canal now under local control, Andy's arrived to see what Harry knows about the canal's pending multinational sale. As Andy observes, Panama is "Casablanca without heroes", and that's precisely how Boorman depicts it: a melting pot of greed, ambition, and backroom manoeuvring, where Andy can bed an embassy official (Catherine McCormack) while squeezing information from Harry, who concocts a phony "silent opposition" that puts British and American forces on full alert. Harry's wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) is pulled into the scenario by Andy's ruthless scheming, and The Tailor of Panama reveals how a simple fabrication can provoke trigger-happy forces around the globe. Part comedy and part political horror thriller--with a tragic supporting role for Brendan Gleason, from Boorman's The General--this is old-fashioned spy stuff made new by leCarré's inventive plotting and keen ear for the dialogue of rogues. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

He was a sex mad lazy man and I really did not like this character and though that if he would have played it with more seriousness it would have been so much better. Harry's character was good and quite funny at times, he was very eccentric with his stories and I did find it hard to distinguish what was real and what wasn't. I did find it quite strange when he kept getting a vision of his old business partner appearing and then talking to hi...more

Crowned Review The Tailor Of Panama (DVD): Carry on up the Panama (1091 words)

Saturday night; cold, wet and miserable. Too grim to venture out. Plan B; a nice curry at home, followed by a movie and a bottle of red wine. Flicking through my dwindling selection of unwatched titles, I came across 'The Tailor of Panama,' left here by my son. Billed on the sleeve as having had it's world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on February 11th 2001 - 'Classy, articulate and richly humorous,' it looks promising and we decide to give it a go. This is a spy story based on the 1996 book of the same title by John Le Carre. The three leading characters are played by Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis. Andy Osnard played by ...  Read the complete review

The Tailor of Panama boasts a superb cast including Pierce Brosnan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush. Add to that acclaimed Director John Boorman at the helm and the writing skills of John le Carre, BUT This film left me COLD. Current – and arguably the best – 007, Brosnan pulls on the spy mantle once more. But this time it is of disgraced MI 6 agent Andy Osnard who has been exiled to the diplomatic corps of Panama. Desperate to show he is worthy of a recall to the ‘big league’, Osnard looks to sniff out the big deal that will get him back into ‘circulation’. He enlists the services of ex-Saville Row ...  Read the complete review

This is a film which I found when scouting for bargains on EBay, I though that I would give it a go as it stars Pierce Brosnan who I quite like. Pierce plays the role of Andrew Osnard who works for MI6 and gets sent to Panama to check on the safety of the canal. When he arrives he decides that he is going to need a spy working for him so he can get the inside information which he needs. He discovers a tailor, Harry, played by Gregory Rush, who works for all the important people in panama. Andy gets background information of Harry so he has no choice to spy for him. Harry is a vivid storyteller and uses it everyday in his work but will he be able to ...  Read the complete review

A movie that hits the screens starring Pierce Brosnan and Jamie Lee Curtis can usually expect a huge fanfare and a pre-publicity budget that would buy a small Central American country. The Tailor of Panama snuck into cinemas with a slightly embarrassed grin, and I got the impression that Pierce Brosnan will be happy if it sneaks off again without anyone noticing. The story is loosely based on the John Le Carre novel of the same name, although the story has been brought up to date to take into account the political changes that have taken place in the region, oh, and the canal they built. Strangely most of the filming took place in Eire, but that is in no way ...  Read the complete review

Disgraced British agent Andy Osnard is packed off to Panama out of the way. Eager to get back into his boss' good books, he wants to provide him with some useful information. Choosing Harry Pendel, a tailor who is well-known in Panama, as his spy, he pays him to get hold of information relevant to the Panama Canal, hoping that some of it will prove useful. The fact that Harry is married to Louisa, who is the PA to the President of the Panama Canal, seems to be promising. Harry, initially reluctant to participate, is eventually lulled by much-needed cash. Unfortunately, he is not as well-connected as Andy hopes, and in the end, he makes up a story of revolution that Andy ...  Read the complete review
