The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (DVD) ... Allen Danziger ... / DVD released 26 September, 2006 at Dark Sky Films / Features of the DVD: Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, Original recording remastered, Widescreen, NTSC / This sensational, extremely influential, 1974 low-budget horror movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Salem's Lot), may be notorious for its title, but it's also a damn fine piece of moviemaking. And it's blood-curdling scary, too. Loosely based on the true crimes of Ed Gein (also a partial inspiration for Psycho), the original Jeffrey Dahmer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of teenagers who pick up a hitchhiker and wind up in a backwoods horror chamber where they're held captive, tortured, chopped up, and impaled on meat hooks by a demented cannibalistic family, including a character known as Leatherface who maniacally wields one helluva chainsaw. The movie's powerful sense of dread is heightened by its grainy, semi-documentary style--but it also has a wicked sense of humour (and not that camp, self-referential variety that became so tiresome in subsequent horror films of the 70s, 80s and 90s). OK, in case you couldn't tell, it's "not for everyone", but as a landmark in the development of the horror/slasher genre, it ranks with Psycho, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. --Jim Emerson

The best horror films don’t just scare you, they also freak the hell out of you. There’s a world of difference between films like Halloween or Scream, which derive their effects from suspense and skilfully wrought make-you-jump moments, and films like Dawn of the Dead or Videodrome, which leave you feeling like you’ve been left in the hands of a genuinely warped mind. It’s like the difference between a babysitter who jumps out at you from behind the curtains wearing a scary mask, and one who tells you that not only are your parents dead, but that it’s *your fault*. Thing is, most of the genuinely nasty horror movies aren’t necessarily all that great when it ...  Read the complete review

I have a big soft spot for horror films that start something that they have absolutely no prior knowledge of - that find a point so vulnerable in our social psyche that they just scare the crap out of us, create modern myths and spawn followings of cult proportions. Most horror movies run wild with blood, screaming teenagers and mad axe wielding murderers without finding society's Achilles Heel - maybe something to do with the director looking in the other direction when the scenes are being shot - yet there is one film containing all of the above basic schlock horror fodder that remains as effective today as it did 27 years ago...except that the mad axe wielding ...  Read the complete review

The Texas chainsaw massacre is a hugely underrated film; it has a style and charisma that many horror films fall short of. The film is a very standard horror film in that it begins with a horrific visual, continues to do all the usual in depth characterisations and then goes on to do as the title implies. The film isn’t a high blown Hollywood blockbuster; it has more of an affinity with the more independent style of direction. Chainsaw massacre doesn’t have any big stars in it, and was directed by a relative unknown, but what these people managed to create will go down in infamy. Texas chainsaw massacre is a cult film; people are drawn in to ...  Read the complete review
