Advantages: This is a REAL scary movie

Disadvantages: None - it's a masterpiece

For kids raised on jolly 'Scream' movies and rubbery effects, this grim old-timer will probably come as quite a shock. The plot, annoying teens wander around old house and end up as dinner for grubby cannibal psychos, isn't a million miles away from the slasher movie standard, but the tone and handling of this film is of a different class. The camerawork might be shaky, but the shocks are blood-curdling, and the seemingly endless chase, as Leatherface relentlessly hunts the sole survivor, is exhausting and horrifyinig. There's a trace of sly Texan humour, but the hardest thing to stomach isn't the gore (which is relatively light considering the movie's reputation) but the all-embracing atmosphere of irrational violence and fear that the film generates. Not for the squeamish, but essential for anyone who likes to be really scared.
