horrific yet bizzarely amusing (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (DVD))

Advantages: Grainy 'real looking' horror, blair witch style (but actually a bit scary!!) Disadvantages: Can appear a bit rediculous
I watched this particular film a few years back when it was still banned in the UK. I was in Holland with some friends and we rented a version that was still in english but with Dutch subtitles. I don't know if this detracted from some of the obvious horror but there were certainly moments when i had to stifle a laugh. This may also be due to the fact that i was brought up in the generation of glossy high budget films crammed to bursting point with special effects that all too often look too real. This is a film that still has that 'home-movie' look to it, shakey cameras and colour that is a shade different to reality. Considering the hype that has surrounded this film over the years and its ban in the UK, this was not a film that appeared to be overly frightening. When you really consider the storyline and concentrate on the spooky, tension filled moments that make this film such a classic, you can see why it has come to be considered a true horror. The moments before the voilence begins when the travellers pick up the hitch-hiker are almost unbearable as you wait for the mayhem to begin. In the same way when we think the final character has escaped to safety only to be presented with more psychopathic maniacs, we begin to really appreciate the genius of this film. Summary: |
