'The Thing' came at the end of a long line of movies made in the shadow of 'Alien', and was a disappointment at the office. This may have been critter fatigue, or it may have been that John Carpenter's best film is also his most aggressively misanthropic and negative. Kurt Russell's hero makes an awful amount of mistakes, and the cast spend virtually all of the film tearing strips off each other before the alien turns them inside out. Whatever, 'The Thing' appropriately changed form completely on video, and became a huge success, largely because horror was one of the first big deals in the home video market, and with all of those ... The Thing is a cult classic sci-fi horror that wasn't a huge box office smash because it was dwarfed by a nicer alien by the name of E.T. However over the years on home video the film has found it's audience and still holds up after nearly twenty years. Directed by John Carpenter, the film stars Kurt Russell as part of a research team at a remote antartic research station. An alien bruied in the ice for over 100,000 years is discovered. When awoken from it's deep sleep the alien wreks havoc by taking on many guises. The film shows the true isolation of a group of men as things go wrong and no one can be trusted. It also features some great effects ... Read the complete review

The very concept of this film was and still is revolutionary. The film is pretty old (around 10 years) and should definitely be identified as a classic. The setting for this film takes place in the artic world where a crew is sent to seek out what happened to the last expedition, which has as you'll later see been slaughtered by some thing. The crew being extremely clever decides to grab this grotesque thing and analyse it back at their base, which unfreezes and claims the lives of many more people. The fact is that this film is gripping right from the onset. The first bit of gore being with the dog, whose head splits in four, with a rush of tentacles and ... Read the complete review

The only horror film I can remember that ever actually scared me, I went out and bought the Thing on DVD as soon as it was available. And I wasn't disappointed... This has just about everything you could possibly want in a DVD -- quite apart from the movie itself, which is a classic. The director/actor commentary (Carpenter, Russell) is for once truly enlightening rather than self-congratulatory (see Ridley Scott's Alien commentary, for a good example of the latter), full of insight and anecdote. The participants seem to be genuinely enjoying the reminiscences, covering not just the minutiae of the making of the movie, but also chat about the ... Read the complete review

The thing, John Carpenters classic is finially on DVD, the way it was originally ment to be seen in the cinema. The film itsself is fantastic and what stands it out from the VHS version has to be the sound. This film is what your surround sound DVD home cinema was made for. From the opening credits to the last scene you really feel as if you are there in Antartica with the cast because you can hear the wind rushing around though the back speakers. The first time I heard it I had to put a jumper on, spooky eh. The DVD comes with a whole host of features including the usual cast biographies (with piccies and loads of details), through the commentry by Kurt ... Read the complete review
