The Three Stooges Collection Volume 1
      =================================

      Early Stooges History:
      =================
Most people think of the 3 stooges as Curly, Larry and Moe. However that's not how it all began.
Some of the shorts and movies can confuse people when strange faces are seen appearing AS the 3 stooges.
      Here is a quick recap:
In the mid 1920's Ted Healy put together a team to tour the theatres, they where Shemp (Howard), his brother Moe (Howard) and a good friend Larry (Fine). They where called Ted Healy and His Racketeers.
Later Shemp left and Ted recruited another Howard brother, Curly.
Eventually Ted Healy left and Curly, Larry and Moe went on to become The Three Stooges.
The most famous line up was complete.

Their where to be a further 2 stooges, Joe and Curly Joe who respectively replaced Curly when he sadly passed away.
Contained are 2 DVD's with the following films on each:

      Disc 1
      ======
      1. Woman Haters
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The movie is completely written and performed in rhyme!!
The guys join the Women Haters club and swear to have nothing to do with the opposite sex.
However, Curly is engaged and has to break it off but his in-laws will kill him if he cancels the wedding.
He gets married and then has to hide it from the other guys.
      Then the singing starts!
Their slapstick is not yet polished. Even with the nose tweaks, 2 fingered eye pokes and head slapping, it is a bit flat.

      2. Punch Drunks
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
Moe is a promoter looking for a new boxer.
Larry is a violinist and every time he plays 'Pop goes the Weasel' Curly becomes a boxing typhoon.
All 3 hook up and the madness begins.
During a fight Larrys violin gets broken and he has to resort to other methods to help Curly in the ring.
This is one of their better shorts.
The slapstick is fast and furious

      3. Men in Black
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The Stooges are doctors only because they have been at the training hospital for so long.
Dr Howard, Dr Fine and Dr Howard are useless, hopeless and plain dangerous!
There is no real storyline just anarchy and farcical madness.
Curly is "a victim of circumstance" ad is slapped, poked and malleted continually throughout the short.
Reminded me of the 'Marx Brothers'.
The slapstick is fast, furious and downright barmy.

      4. Three Little Pigskins
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
A short based on American football.
The team owner needs 3 replacements pronto to save his $50,000 dollars that he's bet on the game.
He mistakenly recruits the stooges and from this point on lunacy and madness ensue.
This is one of their better shorts. By now they had their routines down to a fine art.

      5. Horses' Collars
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The boys are Pinkerton detectives trying to help a damsel in distress who is being threatened by a villainous rancher.
      Sub-Plot:
When Curly sees a mouse he always goes fighting mad and the only way to calm him down is with a piece of cheese! Barmy!
They arrive out west and the cowboys never know what hit them.
      This is a good short.
The slapstick is fast, furious and funny.

      6. Restless Knights
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
On his death bed their father tells the boys that they are of noble blood.
They go to the queen and are made royal protectors! Plotters attempt to abduct the queen but the Stooges intervene as only they can.
This is one of their better shorts.
The slapstick is fast and furious with many jokes and puns throughout.

      7. Pop Goes the Easel
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
They boys are out of work and starving when they accidentally get chased by the police. They hide in an art studio and end up causing a paint fight.
This is one of their better shorts.

      8. Uncivil Warriors
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
Set during the civil war the stooges are secret service men and are called upon to discover the plans of the enemy.
      This is an excellent short.
The slapstick is barmy and with lots of jokes.

      9. Pardon My Scotch
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The boys are painter and decorators working in a liquor shop. The owner's runs out of whiskey and the boys knock up a cocktail of liquids that resembles Scotch.
      But with explosive results.
      This is an excellent short.
Filled with lots of jokes and puns.

      10. Hoi Polloi
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The Stooges are bin men and they are offered the chance to become gentlemen. A socialite recons he can transform them in just 3 months.
They end up wrecking his house, his party and costing him $10,000.
This is one is a so so short.
The slapstick is mediocre but the jokes are still funny.

      11. Three Little Beers
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The boys are beer delivery men when their company offer a prize of $100 for the winner of the annual works golf tournament.
The course takes a battering as do the members and the slapstick builds to a chaotic ending.
This is one of their better shorts.

      Disc 2
      =====
      12. Ants in the Pantry
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The Stooges are pest exterminators who are about to be sacked for having no work. So they decide to infest a house with every bug, ant, mouse and moth they can find.

      13. Movie Maniacs
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The Stooges travel to Hollywood to seek fame and fortune. They get mistaken for new movie directors and cause chaos and mayhem with running gags throughout.
This is one of their better shorts especially when their in the baggage car going to Hollywood.
The slapstick is manic and funny.

      14. Half Shot Shooters
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
Set in the 1st world war. The guys are the laziest and worst soldiers ever. They even sleep through the end of the war.

      15. Disorder in the Court
      Starring: Curly, Larry and Moe
The Stooges are witnesses in court to help save a young dancer who is accused of murder. They end up wrecking the courtroom. Contains a song and dance routine , ugh.

Unfortunately whilst working as useless carpenters in a local cabinet makers they destroy a $50,000 antique chinese cabinet and so end up having to give their inheritance to pay for the wrecked cabinet.
Madness all the way with the Stooges slapstick routines.

      Opinions:
      ======
They where a product of their time from Vaudeville days and then onto the silver screen. Loved by generations of fans and with an oft copied style but never matched.
The movies on these 2 DVD's are wonderful to watch and will leave you smiling.
The 3 stooges are one of my favourite comedy teams of all time.
Their humour was tried and tested and involved lots and I mean lots of physical humour with very violent but at the same time cartoon type sentiments. A bit like a tom and jerry cartoon or the road runner and coyote where you know that even when an anvil drops on his head 5 seconds later he will be back on his feet and fighting back.

Mostly the stooges fought amongst themselves but every now and again some poor sap or bystander would suffer the wrath and then all hell would let loose.
Though they changed their line up over the years, the same format kept them going for 40 years. From 1930 up until 1970.
This is timeless and inoffensive humour.

Sound quality at times is a bit scratchy but to me that adds to the enjoyment.
Picture quality is along the same lines, not really DVD but non the less highly watchable.
DVD Extras, non to speak of apart from the usual Chapter selection.
      Highly recommended.

      Greg.
