Advantages: A very moving and emotional film
Disadvantages: Not as good as the book but that's to be expected
Henry DeTamble has a rare genetic disorder which propels him backwards or forwards through time without a moment's notice. When he meets Clare she claims that she has known him since she was 6 years old, but Henry has never seen her in his life. The pair end up falling in love and Henry learns how, in the future, he will travel back in time to see Clare when she was only a little girl. But despite their deep love for each other and the fact that they are destined to be together, Clare is often left alone and in pain with no idea when or if Henry will return.

This film is based on the book of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger which I'd read before the film was released so I knew what to expect. Because of this I ended up crying purely at the trailers and my husband would give me the strangest look as if I was completely bonkers. However, I knew how the story went so I told myself that it was perfectly acceptable for me to cry at a 2 minute clip.
I thought the two main actors, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, did brilliantly and they were both perfect for their roles. They made a lovely couple, very sweet, romantic and in love. Both were warm and very likeable characters, as were their younger characters, as well as their daughter and they all seemed so realistic and nice and just like ordinary people, which made me able to connect with them, which, in turn, made the story even more powerful.
The book was simply amazing and, as expected, no film would ever be able to be quite as good. As the book isn't condensed into less than 2 hours, it means that it contains much more detail, description and scenes than the film does which gives us a better understanding of the situation and lets us relate even more to the characters. Having read the book first, due to the slightly confusing nature of the film jumping backwards and forwards in time, I wasn't sure if those who hadn't read the book would properly understand what was going on. However, the film was very good at making us understand the situation but I think for anyone who's read the book beforehand, the film may fall a little short of expectations. For those who haven't read the book though this seems to be a fantastic film so I'd recommend seeing the film first before reading the book.
This is a wonderful film about finding and keeping love despite the difficult things that it may bring. Although I admit this does make it sound like a soppy girly film it really isn't - it's moving, emotional and powerful and not just one for the girls. But be prepared with your tissues though!
Running time: 107 minutes
Certificate rating: 12A
Director: Robert Schwentke
Summary: One of my favourite love story films
