... slightly different role and proves that he is a versatile actor and not stereotyped. The plot of this film follows Truman played by Carey who's life is a fake one, which he doesn't realise until later on in the story. Truman Burbank lives a happy life with a good job, however he doesn't realise that since he was born he has been the star of a reality TV show. His hometown is in fact just a film set and his friends and family are actors. What I found fascinating and entertaining about this film is the way Truman ...more

I remember many years back now when I found The Truman Show tape cassette lurking around my household and decided to throw it in the VHS player knowing little about it other than the fact that the lead is played by Jim Carrey. This 1998 movie captured my imagination as it lives out a real-life Big Brother situation in feature length fashion, although now almost a decade on re-watching the movie hasn't been a bed of roses for me. In fact, having thought so highly of the movie when I was younger it was quite disappointing as I sat through the whole thing the other week. Is Jim Carrey a kids actor? Well not really, as I know people of all ages have enjoyed his performances ...  Read the complete review

The Truman Show was acclaimed as a highly imaginative and original philosophical blockbuster, that validated Jim Carrey's career and should have won Oscars. Well, like most original philosophical blockbusters of the last few decades, they nicked the idea from Philip K. Dick. Even if they didn't acknowledge the fact that the plot is massively analogous to Dick's 'Time Out of Joint' (right down to the significance of the moon). But never mind. The trailer for the Truman Show excited me more than any other I had ever seen until that point. The hints at metacinematic commentary and Dickian ideas scattered liberally throughout (God characters, ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review On With The Show! (1529 words)

It?s funny how sometimes the smallest things stick in your memory. I can still, all these years on, remember the first time I saw ?The Truman Show?. It was with my mother and we were at the cinema at Lakeside in West Thurrock. I don?t remember the date, or even why we?d gone to Lakeside in the first place, but I remember we decided to see a film on a whim, and this was our eventual choice. I suspect part of the reason I remember is because in all my (nearly) thirty years, I have only seen two films at the cinema with only my mother for company. The other was ?E. T.?, and I remember ...  Read the complete review
