Advantages: Some funny scenes
Disadvantages: Several parts that aren't that amusing
My first visit to the cinema this year (at least to my knowledge) was due today and after having a quick look at what was on, it was going to be a pretty much random choice. The Ugly Truth seemed to have good ratings on the site that I was looking, dooyoo and a colleague had mentioned it at work.
The last thing that I saw Katherine Heigl in was "Knocked Up" and I found fairly entertaining. The Ugly Truth proved to be yet another romantic comedy, this Robert Luketic directed affair was however very different from the Judd Appatow style.
The plot is based on a faltering television channel of which Abby (Heigl) is the producer, the station owner decides to hire Mike Chadway (Gerrard Butler), a chauvinistic and crass host for a segment of the show "The Ugly Truth", Chadway and Abby immediately have a dislike for one another but when Abby meets the so-called man of her dreams, the squeaky clean doctor next door Colin, it's Mike Chadway that talks her through chatting him up.
There are some very funny slapstick moments and a handful of humorous lines thrown in too, there are plenty of jokes that don't really do the trick though and it's these moments of mediocrity that was perhaps best summed up by my wife when she said that it's the kind of film that's worth watching if it appears on television but isn't worth visiting the cinema for.
Due to the nature of the film where it compares the way that women think to that of men, there's enough jokes for both male and female viewers to relate to.
Summary: Not one of the best rom coms around
