Advantages: Not awful, amusing in some parts
Disadvantages: Predictable, not a great cast list (not even one worth mentioning on this review lol)
Film only review.
Before we start lets get it right this is a romantic comedy so if you suffer an aversion to those steer clear of this review and the film is the best advice I can give you!
Set in Sacramento, America we start off by meeting the very professional Abbey (Katherine Heigi) who is the producer of a morning tv show which ratings are falling badly of. Slightly uptight with a checklist for all guys she meets has a mental (and an actual!) checklist which is making her the type of gal which is all work no play. One night she goes on a disastrous date, gets back, flicks on the tv and her cat flicks the remote control off a news programme that is on to a late night cable channel where Mike (Gerard Butler) is the star of a show called 'The Ugly Truth'. Mike has a misogynistic and egotistical way to him about the thoughts of men and women being so different, is rude and obtuse in his analysis and annoys Abby so much when she's watching that she calls in to a phone in segment of his show to pull his ideas down a peg or two.
Course this doesn't work and he resorts to insults and calling her a dog. Not good, particularly when the following day she goes into work to find that he is about to work on her live show that she produces to try pull in more of an audience
She doesn't like his methods and opinions, Mike continues to be rather sexist and doesn't care about his crude language on and off the air and she remains uptight.
Abby meets a gorgeous neighbour and decides to not play cool (as she doesn't know how to!) and phones him in front of Mike who thinks (and is right) that she is hopeless with the opposite sex. He then wades in and decided to 'help' her get and keep this guy. This involves a shopping trip and his wisdom on do's and don't and yep Abby gets the relationship she wants....or does she? Or is her new man Josh actually dating Mike through her?
The ending of the film is predictable and I'm trying my best to not give it away but before even putting the dvd in my dvd player I predicted the ending! Annoying when you can do that I always think!
What you get with this is 1 hr and 32 minutes of fluff really. Gerard Butler looks like a munchkin and for me he is much overrated and is miscast totally in this film for starters.
Yes there are slightly amusing parts in this film and the growing friendship is played out quite well. I have to admit to being amused by this films colourful language and openness about sex I.E Mike buys Abbey a pair of vibrating pants to help her 'bean' and her orgasm scene in a busy restaurant with him, her boyfriend and a load of suits was quite amusing but sadly like I said earlier I knew what the ending of this film would be. Sadly I hoped for some sizzle between the pair which I didn't get and I didn't find it sexy but it was ok just not the best watch I've had in ages lol.
Directed By Robert Luketic. Classified 15.

Summary: Not awful but is it really worth watching? The jury is out on that question lol
