Hollywood loves film franchises. Once a film has achieved some box-office success it is far simpler and much less risky to simply try and reproduce that success in a series of follow up films... better for the film studios that is! Mostly the sequels to the originals are pale imitations and the merits of the films gradually diminishes so in the end the output becomes formulaic...film by numbers if you like.
