Advantages: Cam Gigandet with his shirt off, Gary Oldman, good story
Disadvantages: Not at all scary, more comical, could have done a lot more
Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) plays a young woman who has a normal life - good friends at university, a great boyfriend, babysitting the neighbours' kids at the weekend - until strange things start happening around her. She begins to have dreams and hallucinations where she sees a little boy just standing and staring at her. Soon she realises the hallucinations are real and that this boy is following her everywhere she goes.
These and other strange happenings lead her find out that she had a twin brother who died at birth and also lead her to a woman who knows more than she's letting on. She finds out that her mother, who died when Casey was just a young girl, was haunted by this same boy and that her death had a lot more to it than she believed. She discovers a curse that has been haunting her family since the time of Nazi Germany and that this demon will stop at nothing to get into this world by entering the bodies of those around her.
Casey turns to help from her best friend Romy (Meagan Good), her boyfriend Mark (Cam Gigandet - gorgeous!) and Rabbi Sendak (Gary Oldman) to try and drive the demon away.
Supposedly meant to be a 'superior, shiver-inducing fright-fest', The Unborn is nothing of the sort. If you go and see this film expecting to be frightened out of your life, as the trailers indicate, you will be highly disappointed. My husband wouldn't come and see this film with me because he's a big scaredy-cat so I went with a friend instead. Afterwards I told him that he should have come because it was the least scary film I've seen in ages and was more comical. There were a few parts that made me jump but other than that I did not find myself cowering in my seat or grabbing my friend's hand. The way the demon took over the actors bodies was simply laughable by causing them to walk on all fours and by turning their head around 360º exorcist style.
The story line was in fact quite good but I don't think they put it into acting very well. They could have done much more with it and made it a lot scarier. I don't think it even needed the 15 certificate rating they gave it - I'm sure my 13 year old sister would not have found it scary either.
The main good thing about this film was that you got to see Cam Gigandet with his shirt off and I must say that this really did pique my interest!
The very end of the film had an unexpected twist which suggests that a sequel could be in the making but, from the quality of this film, I really don't think they should bother.
Summary: If you expect to be scared, you won't be.
