Advantages: That ending! terrific actors
Disadvantages: nope!
Undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s greatest films ever and definitely the greatest ending to a film ever. This film follows the story of five criminals who meet after being put together in an identity parade and then proceed to do a number of ‘jobs’ together. Eventually they get assigned by a mysterious Turk named Kaiser Sauzee to undertake a raid on a boat, after which if they are successful, they can walk away with $90million split between them. Sauzee has a fierce reputation and they do not want to do the job. However, Sauzee has ways of forcing them to do the job and they take it on. The film is mainly held in a police detective’s office in LA where Verbal Kint, a cripple played by Kevin Spacey, tries to persuade the cops that Sauzee exists and was responsible for drawing them into the raid which culminated in an explosion, killing many people on the boat. As he tells the story he will not only draw the police into his story but you too will be engrossed. When his story ends, he leaves and the film concludes with one of the greatest and cleverest endings ever to appear in a film. It will leave you wondering at the marvel of the conclusion and it is hard not to applaud the writers, who really have produced a piece of brilliance. The ending though, is not the only good thing about the film. The star-studded cast including Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Pete Postelthwaite and Benicio Del Toro are all magnificent and there are some well-carried-out set-pieces, which remind us the film has an action side to it as well. This film ranks high in my top ten of all time and it’s only when you have seen it at least twice and looked back and thought about it that you can really appreciate it’s brilliance.
