The Vanishing (DVD) ... Sutherland ... / DVD released 25 August, 2003 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / It's not unusual for Hollywood to remake European hits. What is unusual is the director of the original getting the chance to helm the new version with an American cast, which is what happened with this film based on an intensely creepy Dutch film of the same name (both directed by George Sluizer). Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock are on vacation when, while stopped at a crowded rest area, she disappears. He devotes the next several years to discovering what happened to her, ruining his life in the process. When he does get a clue, it leads him to Jeff Bridges, who plays a bizarre and highly organized individual whose motives are almost as strange as he is. Bridges is spooky, but Sluizer ultimately is undone by Hollywood's demand for a happy ending, which makes this film affecting but far less unsettling than the original. --Marshall Fine

On their way to their vacation spot, they spot for petrol at a petrol station. Jeff goes in to pay and his girlfriend Diane mysteriously disappears without a trace. Jeff becomes obssessed with finding out what happened to her that day and is looking for her even three years later. He has a new girlfriend Rita at this point. An oddball man Bar...more

Crowned Review The Vanishing (DVD): Now You See Me... (1037 words)

Rating:

A review of just the film, this was a remake of a famous Dutch film from 1988. Originally released in 1993, you can easily get the region 2 DVD online for less than £5. Barney Cousins is an apparently mild-mannered family man who works hard and dotes on his young daughter. But Barney is going through something of a crisis and suddenly makes a decision that, in order to 'discover' himself he wants to abduct a complete stranger. And then one day, Barney turns up at a highway gas station and spots a pretty young woman apparently on her own. Jeff Harriman and his girlfriend Diane are on vacation near Mount St Helens, when they change their travel plans ...  Read the complete review

Fantastic, stunning, exquisite - endless superlatives spring to mind when attempting to write about this film. I think you're going to easily guess that I'm a bit of a fan. I was having a look on dooyoo to see what had already been written and there's currently only one other opinion (a very good one mind you!). Time to redress the balance I thought, time to spread the word (bit of a hobby of mine - I'm always forcing people to watch this film). I first saw George Sluizer's The Vanishing about six years ago. I came across it by chance on television and after hastily consulting the tv guide (which assured me it was very good!) I thought I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Vanishing (DVD): The Vanishing (1988) (278 words)

WARNING: After reading this opinion you might walk, or maybe run, to your local Blockbusters to rent 'The Vanishing'. However, BE CAREFUL, there are two versions; 1. George Sluizer's 1988 original Dutch/French masterpiece (reviewed here) 2. George Sluizer's 1991 God-awful American re-make (starring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock). DO NOT watch the re-make, not even on Channel 5 when you're really bored. WARNING 2: Once you've seen 'The Vanishing' please don't blab the ending to your friends. Someone did it to me and I wasn't happy. When Saskia and Rex, a young Dutch couple, stop off at a ...  Read the complete review

This film has some big names including Kiefer Sutherland, Jeff Bridges, Nancy Travis and also Sandra Bullock. It is based on the novel The Golden Egg by Tim Krabbe. This film is a psychological thriller so maybe avoid it if you scare easy. Im a bit of a chicken when it comes to scary films but i thought this one was brilliant and really jumpy.
