The Wackness is a coming of age film set in the hot summer of 1994 in New York. It's a coming of age type film about a teenage drug dealer, Luke, and his life. Despite being the guy with the weed and providing the fuel for many a party, he isn't in the popular crowd and feels somewhat isolated from the rest of peers. Seeking help, he regularly visit's a therapist, played by a fantastic Ben Kingsley, who really does have a terrific range of characters under his belt. Unlike most therapists, Kingsley charges bags of dope rather than cash to young Luke and is fittingly undergoing his own feelings of isolation, struggling to come to terms with his monotonous life and yearning for the days of his youth. Kingsley also has a hot step daughter, part of the 'it crowd' at school, who Luke just so happens to have a crush on.
Put it all together and you have a fantastic film, featuring some poignant moments, as well as some funny ones. The relationship between the drug dealer and his therapist is intriguing throughout, and throw in a kicking soundtrack featuring all the best hip hop of 94, and you have yourself one heck of a film. Check it out, it's a five star no doubt.
