The War Zone (DVD) ... DVD released 01 May, 2002 at Cinema Club / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Full Screen, PAL, Widescreen / As unflinching and bleak as it is beautiful, Tim Roth's directorial debut The War Zone is remarkably accomplished filmmaking. Adapted by Alexander Stuart from his own novel, the film centres on a family that has just moved from London to the wind-swept seaside during winter. The relative isolation soon reveals an ongoing incestuous relationship between the working-class father (Ray Winstone) and his 17-year-old-daughter, Jessie. The middle-class mother (Tilda Swinton) has just given birth to their third child and desperately avoids knowing the truth, leaving Tom, the younger brother, with the horrific responsibility of exposing the family secret. Fearless in its hard-fought depiction of incest, The War Zone pulls no punches; this vivid portrayal of abuse within a family and the scathed consciousness that results is not for the faint of heart. True to his theatre background, Roth doesn't explain how or where such brutal choices were first taken, choosing rather to let the actors bear the ambiguities and anguish of a terrible knowledge in the their body language.--Fionn Meade, Amazon.com

But the real credit must go to Lara Belmont, who plays daughter and sister to the two other main characters. She steal...more

This is such a harrowing movie, starring Ray Winstone and directed by Tim Roth. It goes from powerful scene to powerful scene and I had trouble watching at some points. After many years of not really doing very much actor Ray Winstone returned to full-time acting, his first major role saw him acting in good friend Tim Roth's movie The War Zone, an adaptation of the gritty novel by Alexander Stuart. Teenager Tom (Freddie Cunliffe) is disturbed by his departure from London, all the friends he leaves behind and the style of life he has. Settling in a small Devon village, Tom gets to grips with life in a place where technology and new trends don't even seem to exist; and with a family he feels strangely alienated from. His dad (Ray Winston) is a man of few words, and a nasty temper, his mother (Tilda Swinton) is heavily pregnant ...  Read the complete review
