The Warriors (DVD) ... DVD released 02 July, 2001 at Paramount Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / In 1979, The Warriors seemed like a frighteningly realistic possible future for The Big Apple. The film's depiction of multiple street gangs no longer content with occupying their own territories was an uncomfortably real issue across New York City. A deceptively simple plot begins with a truce gathering representatives from all the gangs at a meeting. Would-be leader Cyrus has a vision. Unfortunately a member of the Rogues shoots him before we learn what it is, and then pins the blame on the Warriors. With anything up to 60,000 gang soldiers and 20,000 police on their trail, the seven Warrior members beat a hasty retreat any which way they can back to Coney Island. What's really going on, as per Sol Yurick's original novel, is a subtle examination of the seemingly contradictory traits of loyalty and nobility that occur in a close-knit group. Explosions of violence and a disregard for bystanders are secondary to what the characters mean to one another. All this brotherly love is presented with some truly amazing production design and cinematography: though dark, this is a world of colourful night-lights and even more colourful gang uniforms. Historically, this is a movie way past its sell-by date (it certainly won't instigate real life violence now as it did when released), but thematically it remains a worthy exploration of all those unspoken codes of honour. On the DVD: This is a good movie to test the dark end of the spectrum. It's in 1.78:1 and only in mono, but that somehow works for what's little more than a lot of running around in the dark. The only extra is the original trailer.--Paul Tonks

... just cringed at the corniness: it really is a pretty rubbish movie! The plot is so simple and will appeal to a lot of people: basically you need to fight your way around the city, taking on different gangs as you go. Funnily enough I am reading the history of hip-hop at the mo, and this film seems to be built on reality as there were gang meetings to try and make peace, which ended in the death of the peacemaker. Despite the weak acting, ridiculous costumes and lack of decent plot, this film still has some appeal. T...more

The Warriors is a cult classic film, recently re-enlivened with a computer game release. It's a gang film based in the US, telling the story of the warriors gang, who are framed for murdering a gang leader who was trying to unite them. They have to fight their way through the streets to find their way home, and it won't be easy. As a 13 year old I loved this film, but in my late 20s I just cringed at the corniness: it really is a pretty rubbish movie! This for me is one of the coolest films of the Seventies, directed by Walter Hill, it is essentially the ultimate computer beat em up made into a film, but really pre-dated computer games. In a balmy New York City in the late seventies, the leaders of all of New York's major street gangs have been called together by Cyrus the charismatic "president of the biggest gang in the city", the Riffs. Cyrus talks to the crowd telling them how the gangs can control the City if they work together, he advocates that the gangs and affiliates total "60,000 soldiers" and, "There ain't but 20,000 police in the whole town". Just as the ...  Read the complete review

The Warriors is a 1979 film based on a book from 1965 of the same name, by Sol Yurick. This big screen adaptation is actually based on two stories and they are amalgamated into one plot in the film itself. It takes many of the elements of the movie from the novel 'The Warriors' about a gang called the 'Coney Island Dominators.' The book is a story of a huge truce meeting between all New York's Street gang's which goes wrong when a gang leader is killed and the story details the 'Dominators'' journey home from the meet and the reflections on the gang life they live. However, the film expands upon the plot of the book by borrowing elements from a Greek legend ...  Read the complete review

'The Warriors', after it's release in 1979, caused a lot of controversy and stirred up a lot of trouble. Whilst the movie tells the story of a fictional New York based gang, real life gangs had taken offence to their graffiti logos being obscured by the film crew set designers and had to be paid to star in the film as recompense. A similar incident occured where Hell's Angels insisted that the 'Warrior's' logo had been plagarised from theirs - an accusation the Angel's would uphold by any means necessary. Furthermore, the publicity poster to promote the film - showing arrogant, hard as nails gang members - was deemed to be too inflamatory as several outbreaks of ...  Read the complete review

My biggest question is if people back in the late 70's laughed as much as i did at this movie. Whilst it is a pretty original idea and a great premise for a film, some of the characters and the gangs are so unbelievable it made me want to cry. Plot- 9 members of the warriors gang have been called to a mass gang meeting in the Bronx. However, when one of the most powerful and popular gang leaders in New York is assasinated at the event, the Warriors are blamed. With the radio call going out to tens of thousands of gang members across city calling for their death, the warriors must race through night time New York, facing some of the most dangerous and ...  Read the complete review
