... through some pretty crappy and uninteresting detective work. The storyline is very sketchy and the acting's not that great either. There's a serial killer who takes a picture of his next victim and sends it to the detectives 24 hours before he's going to kill them. If the detectives don't find out who that girl is before the 24 hours is up...she dies. This movie had a lot of potential as the general storyline is very good, but then some director went and screwed up the whole thing. What's eve...more

Premium Review The Watcher (DVD): Keanu Reeves Is "The Watcher" (697 words)
by - written on 08/10/01 (Very useful, 39 readings)

Does the term 'generic' mean anything to you? Well, The Watcher can best be described as generic, nothing more nothing less. Its not a good movie, its not a bad movie, it just...generic. It is a movie which puts a serial killer at the centre of a case involving a pursuing burnt-out FBI agent and centres a whole bunch of games around this pursuit to torment him. Its a movie you have seen countless times before but with different actors and a barely discernable script and a movie you probably do not really want to see again. It has no place in the world because its seat has already been taken and standing room is becoming rapidly limited, and there are surely very ...  Read the complete review

Multi-region DVD Players eh?, great inventions arenŽt they? I mean you can get all the top titles on DVD months earlier than you would here in Blighty and cheaper too, when I bought my player thats what I originally thought, but since then IŽve had the (and I use the term loosely) pleasure of viewing the Region 1 (American) Release of the Watcher, a movie thats been hyped up so much it has to be said when we strip down to the bare bones its a bit of a let-down. Settling down with my staple movie-watching diet of one large tub of Haagen Daaz Ice-Cream and a large bottle of Pepsi hoping that weŽd have a fair old horror movie, we soon found that the thought of the ...  Read the complete review

The Watcher (DVD): Good Film! (545 words)
by - written on 21/04/01

’The Watcher’ stars James Spader as a detective who is in search for a serial killer, played by Keanu Reeves, who, several years back, murdered his wife. Unable to catch him over the years, he moves to Chicago, sort of to get away from what happened. Suddenly, a few young women are being murdered in the same fashion and the serial killer shows his return by sending photographs of his victims within hours of their deaths to the detective to give him a slight head start to save them. Most of the reviews for ’The Watcher’ were bad or not very good. This is why I never really let the critics decide for me on which films are good and which ...  Read the complete review

James Spader is Joel Campell a burned out FBI agent. Campell has quit his FBI job in L.A. and is living on disability in Chicago because he's been traumatized by a mysterious incident regarding a serial killer that got away. The director, (Joe Charbanic) manages to give us small flashbacks of the incident. Very small boring snippets in slow motion filled with intrusive music. For our patience we are finally rewarded with the incident at the end of the movie, by then it doesn't matter. The only thing that isn't a wreck in Joel's life is his helpful and maybe flirtatious relationship with his psychologist Polly (Marisa Tomei). Polly will obviously ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Watcher (DVD): Watch anything apart from this. (591 words)

“The Watcher” is one of those films that despite it having a bad write up everywhere I looked and despite it starring Keanu Reeves I still wanted to see it. I did not know why and I still don’t! The plot is ludicrous to be honest. Keanu plays David Allen Griffin, a serial killer, this was a strange casting choice to begin with but overlooking that, this is a killer with a strange fixation with the detective on his case. James Spader plays FBI agent Joel Campbell. He leaves L.A. after causing the death of one of his victims and guess what? Griffin decides to follow him to Chicago. Griffin comes up with the original idea of sending ...  Read the complete review
