Advantages: mix of everything

Disadvantages: language and violence

This is one of the best films to come out in 2000. It follows a couple of kidnappers who bite off more than they can chew when they kidnap the mouthy pregnant woman that is Robin (Juliette Lewis). For them, the ransom can't come too quickly!

This is a great film. It's cult status is rightly deserved, as it really isn't a conventional film but still has its own brilliance. In many ways it is like a Tarrantino film, with quirky acting, plot, editing and dialogue, but it never did as well as high work.

Well, the plot is excellent. It really examines the captor / captive relationship between the three main characters in some detail. The psychology of that has always interested me, and in many ways there are some resonances with From Dusk til Dawn in the way the supposed victims have a real inner strength.

For the boys there's plenty of shooting and action, including the most painful jumping into glass scene, but the deeper psychological elements will keep everyone happy.

Benicio Del Toro does a brilliant job as one of the captors, and I have to say I like him in everything he's ever done; just brilliant.

Likewise, Juliette Lewis gives her typical ballsy Bronx girl performance and boy does it work; you don't know whether to hit her or hug her. She's a great female lead for a film with strong male performances, and she holds her own with ease.

With strong violence and language, it's no wonder the film is rated an 18, but for those who can handle it it's well worth seeing.

All in all, a brilliant mix of violence and action combined with the psychological torment that takes place in this sort of situation.

Summary: do it
