I am a big fan of Helena Bonham Carter and have been for over fifteen years now. So it was that I was sat, video recorder at the ready, for the Channel 4 TV film premiere of The Wings Of The Dove, a movie Helena made in 1997. I had been planning to just press ‘record’ and go back upstairs to read or try to nag my fiancé off the computer. Half an hour later, I was still sat transfixed in the same chair. It’s that kind of film. It’s quite a gentle drama really, the sort of thing you would expect Helena to be associated with in her Merchant Ivory guise. Unsurprisingly for an adaptation of a Henry James novel, this impossibly beautiful film is a bit of a downer, with yet another American (see The Golden Bowl and Daisy Miller for more of the same) coming a cropper at the hands of Europeans. Allison Elliot does well in an all but unplayable part as the dying heiress who is seduced by the gorgeous couple Helena Bonham Carter and Linus Roache, a pair separated by her rich background and his working class attitudes.
