This classic movie follows the adventures of Dorothy and her dog Toto, when they are transported over the rainbow to Munchkin Land when a twister hits. There, her only chance of returning home to Kansas is to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald city, in hope the Great Oz, a wizard, will help her. Along her way, she meets a scarecrow without a brain, a heart-less tin man and a cowardly lion, who join her in her quest.

When the four friends finally arrive at Emerald City, they discover that the Wizard is an awful fraud and are terribly disappointed, but they have bigger problems on their hands. The Wicked Witch of the West (who is actually very scary) is planning to take her revenge on Dorothy for landing her house on her sister, the Wicked Witch of the East, on her arrival in Munchkin Land and taking back the ruby slippers, which were given to Dorothy by the Good Witch of the North.

Being made in the thirties, the special effects are not as good as what you might get in a modern day children’s film. But all the music is delightful, from the ballad ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ to the unforgettable ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’, the acting is well above average and Munchkin Land is a truly magical place, a real fantasy world, very like the one in ‘The Grinch’ with funny little people and bizarre scenery.

As you’d expect there is a happy ending, and in the end, Dorothy survives her nightmare and defeats the wicked witch. The story of good versus evil and facing your demons is very simple and straightforward, yet it captures the imagination of children and adults alike.

Ditto for me, when the witch says 'wanna play ball, Scarecrow?' it still scares me!
