The central character is Mary Haines who is married and has a young daughter who is in high school, her dream is to design her own clothing range however those dreams have not been fulfilled due to her family commitments. Her world is severely rocked when she finds out her husband has been having an affair with a younger woman and this leads to the break up of her marria...more

Crowned Review The Women (DVD): Here flop the girls! (1163 words)

When I went to see Sex and the City last summer for my birthday, an advert came on for a film that would be released later that year called The Women. I really liked the look of it, from that advert, so decided that when it came out, I would watch it. Finally, my library had got a copy of it on DVD so I eagerly checked it out last week to watch it and finally got around to doing so last week. I was really hoping it would good, but my goodness, what a colossal shambles this ended up being. Mary Haines though her marriage to husband Stephen was happy but apparently not. Her best friend and magazine editor Sylvia finds out from her nail technician Stephen is ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Too Long At Parts (745 words)

I was in the mood for a real girly film the other day and decided to pick one with an obvious title 'The Women'. I had heard about it when it was released in the cinema, but had never actually made the trip to go and see it after hearing mixed reviews about it. I had nothing better to do and felt like a relaxing film so I decided to take a risk and watch this one. It has quite a good well known cast but sometimes that doesn't mean a film will be a success even with this. The film introduces us to a group of New York women who are very close friends from all walks of life. We focus mainly on the character Mary Haines, who is married to a wealthy man and ...  Read the complete review

Diane English directs this comedy drama movie, THE WOMEN. The film centres on Meg Ryan's character Mary Haines, who is successful in life and in her forties. However, when one of her best friends reveals to her that her husband is cheating on her she feels dejected. It's Eva mendes character, Crystal Allen a shop assistant with attitude who is having the affair with Mary's husband. However, Mary's friends are on hand to support her through this turmoil. Debra Messing's character is a chaotic mother, Jada pinkett Smith's character is a lesbian and Annette Benning plays a fashionable career girl who all show Mary the way to discovering a new ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review "13 years of sex with the same man can be a little boring" (723 words)

I will agree with absolutely anyone who claims that The Women is quite a unimaginative remake of Sex and the City The Movie. That being said, I cannot deny having fully appreciated the movie in terms of sheer soap-opera styled entertainment. In typical Sex and the City remake, the film remains light despite a couple of somewhat serious thematic elements. The one thing that struck me after having watched it twice was the fact that there isn't a single man present in the whole movie. Everybody is female and while some male characters are mentioned, they are never actually seen. I believe this might contribute to the movie's popular categorization as a feminist piece of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Women (DVD): OK - marginally amusing but story is flat and characters are ... (611 words)

Mary (Meg Ryan) has a seemingly great life - a big house, rich husband, a daughter and lots of free time for gardening. She also has 3 best friends. One of them, Sylvia finds out that Mary's husband is cheating on her, with the spritzer girl from Saks no less and when Mary finds out her whole world comes crashing down - at least until she starts to find her own voice again. On the surface The Women looks like a great girls drama with a bit of comedy thrown in - perfect for a girls night in. In reality, it's somewhat disappointing. Sure there are some funny moments, and perhaps even some moments you can relate to, but in all honesty the characters aren't that ...  Read the complete review
