Advantages: Great plot and acting
Disadvantages: None
The Wrestler has to go down as one of the best movies of the past couple of years and is certainly, by far and away, the best wrestling movie ever made. I am a huge wrestling fan as it is so as soon as I saw the trailer for this movie I just knew I had to see it and I am so glad I did.
Mickey Rourke plays aging wrestler Randy 'The Ram' Robinson who is a former mainstream wrestling superstar who is now confined to the independent scene and just doing it purely for the rush of the crowd. This mirrors perfectly the situation that the vast majority of wrestlers in the US find themselves in a puts to bed the myth that wrestling is all glitz and glamour.
Randy just longs for that next thrill and it is really interesting for a fan like me to see how this is all people like that crave and they are willing to risk everything, as Randy does in this movie, just to get that "one last moment". There is a love interest element to this film as she becomes his inspiration too but that really plays second fiddle to the almost documentary nature of the wrestling story.
Mickey got himself in fantastic condition to play the part of Randy and this really helps to add to the realism of the movie. He also learned to perform all the moves Randy uses in the film, including the high flying moves from the top rope that are normally reserved for experienced light weight wrestlers, particularly from Mexico. He looks great in the ring and that makes the ring action in the film look great in turn.
The movie caused such a stir in the wrestling world for its authenticity and credibility that the WWE actually pushed the movie and then got Mickey involved in a real life mini-feud with superstar Chris Jericho in the run in to Wrestlemania and they used it as an "old wrestlers should know when to quit" kind of storyline. This worked really well and was massive praise for this film.
To summarise, whether you are a wrestling fan or not, you really need to watch this heartfelt and beautifully crafted movie.
Summary: A must see for everyone
