The X-Files (DVD) ... Anderson ... / DVD released 04 May, 1999 at 20th Century Fox / Features of the DVD: Closed-captioned, Colour, DVD-Video, Letterboxed, NTSC, THX, Widescreen / The definitive American television series of the 1990s. The X-Files comes to the big screen with an anticlimactic whimper. And how could it be otherwise? Why should material so perfectly realised in one medium necessarily translate well into another? The series is crisply and thoughtfully executed in just about every detail, but the heart of its appeal lies in the elegant handling of complicated and evolving ongoing story lines, which is not something movies are especially good at. The big-screen drive for closure cramps the creative style, though it may also help nonfans get a grip on the proceedings. We do get some invigorating thrills and chills, however, and a more satisfying sense of the scale of an all-enveloping human-alien conspiracy than ever before, but there's no more plot development here than in an average two-part season-ending. FBI black sheep Mulder and Scully have been temporarily transferred from the X-Files project to an anti-terrorist unit to investigate an Oklahoma City-style bombing. They uncover a new wrinkle in the Syndicate/Cancer Man conspiracy--basically an attempt to help one bunch of (benign?) aliens fight off another bunch who want to colonise Earth. A spectacular, ice-bound finale thrillingly staged by series-veteran director Rob Bowman offers Mulder (but not a conveniently unconscious Scully) his first clear look at a You Know What, which in some quarters qualifies as an epochal event. Martin Landau offers the agents some crucial clues, and several familiar TV faces (including the Lone Gunmen and Mitch Pileggi's indispensable Assistant Director Skinner) turn up briefly to wink knowingly at faithful fans. --David Chute

... show, rather than waiting for the series to end and then filming a conclusion, like the recent "I Want to Believe" sequel attempted (and didn't really succeed) to do. Whilst it is a cash in of some sort, it's not as baseless and crude as many others - it is entertaining, and makes no concessions - the same fabulous cast return for another solid adventure, although it's unlikely to do anything for those not already besotted with the famed show. The film fills in the gaps when at the end of the show's fifth ...more

Premium Review The X-Files (DVD): Mulder's Crusade for the truth continues (975 words)

========== Review- I wholeheartly apologise if there's certain information that you feel are pivotal to the entire plot but I have tried to include information that are not relevant to plot and which you would find out in the beginning anyway. ========== I love the X-files; it is one of the best science fiction TV shows I have seen, there are two main characters which are FBI agents, Mulder and Scully. Mulder's crusade to find the truth is rooted from his childhood in which he believed his sister was abducted by aliens and Scully, a woman with a hard belief in science itself, she was placed there initially by her departmental superiors to debunk ...  Read the complete review

X-files! well it's a great name to start with because anything can be an X-file (and it is!) there have been some great story lines from the X-files, most about UFO's and aliens etc... and we see FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who are both complete oposites Mulder bevieves "the truth is out there" and that there are aliens and such on our earth and Scully on the other hand although sometimes she is forced to admit she has witnessed something abnormal! she believes there is a logical explanation! It really is a great tv series although for anyone who is slightly paranoid some episodes should be given a miss!! as we are given ideas as to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The X-Files (DVD): Chilling and disorintating (333 words)

The X Files is a truly original sci fi drama, in which the main characters are FBI agents, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Together they attempt to crack the greatest unsolved mysteries of the world. Mulder is the superstitious one, who always goes for the paranormal explanation, whereas Scully is more practical and always goes for the more scientific explanation. They are so different that they kind of cancel each other out and they are the best of friends although the relationship is mostly very professional, for now at least. The programme probably isn’t realistic but it can be very absorbing, addictive in some ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review I think I'm paranoid (215 words)

The truth is out there (sorry, I had to say it!!), and this TV show is one of the best things I've seen in a long time. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson play the parts of the two FBI agents almost perfectly. They even make the more outlandish storylines realistic and believe me with some of the tales this show tells, that statement is a real testament to the acting abilities of the cast. Anyone who has ever believed that aliens exist will find themselves right at home with the show - storylines such as the star player of a baseball team turning out to be from another planet right through to a government conspiracy to align themselves with an alien ...  Read the complete review

*****New review of the latest episode below***** The X-files have been around for a while now. I never saw the first series and only started watching the second half way through as I was bored. I couldn’t stand the show before this as everyone was collecting the X-files games cards of which I thought were extremely sad. I thought the whole idea of the program was sad. But then I started to watch it and got hooked---admittedly some of the programs did fall below expectation but many have kept me interested in the show for ages. The series has been under speculation recently as the stars from what I can see are getting to big for their boots but ...  Read the complete review
