Disadvantages: None
There's Something About Mary is another film that comes from the Farrelly brothers who have given us such gems as Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin and in this latest offering they have hit a home run with their best movie yet.
The film sees a sad-eyed magazine writer named Ted (Ben Stiller) who has never got over the girl of his high school dreams, a girl named Mary (Cameron Diaz) who vanished from his life after a single date in which Ted is carted away in an ambulance. Ted has decided he needs to find Mary and so upon having a lead in Miami he hires seedy detective Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to investigate. Healy finds Mary and reports back to Ted that she's a walrus in a wheelchair but Ted feels maybe he should go and check up on her anyway and see if he can be helpful to her but when Healy explains that Mary is now en route to Japan as a mail-order bride (as they have a sumo culture and so pay by the pound). When Ted discovers the truth that Healy is in fact working hard to make Mary fall for him Ted has to bump into her by accident and make her fall in love with him but can all be saved?
This film is a true favourite of mine with the amazing cast, the music (I simply love Build Me Up Buttercup) and the story. The film is absolutely hilarious and manages to deliver a love story that is not soppy but still hits the right note with the romantic side of the comedy. The movie does have some memorable comedy moments like the infamous hair gel moment but this film is about more than just that and is one that I would recommend to all.
Summary: This film is one of the greatest romantic comedies to have been made and I would recommend to all
