There's Something About Mary is the 1998 romantic comedy by the Farrelly Brothers. It's not your standard rom-com though where boy meets girl, this is boy meets girl, boy gets himself caught in his zipper and gets rushed to hospital instead on the prom, boy still loves girl 13 years on but so does everybody else!
It's a classic film with excellent writing and acting from a cast of very familiar names.
Cameron Diaz plays the beautiful and charming Mary who is unaware that her prom date from 13 years ago is trying to track her down via private detective Pat Healy played by Matt Dillon. After tracking Mary down Dillon realises he is falling for her so tries to put off her old love Ted played by Ben Stiller. Throw into the mix an excellently cast Lee Evans who plays Mary's friend Tucker, football player Brett Favre and Ted's best friend Dom who turns out to be Mary's ex-boyfriend from high school and you have a fantastic film which has you rooting for the good guy!
Diaz shines in this film, using her trademark humour to her full advantage and creating the infamous 'quiff' scene where she slicks what she thinks is Ted's hairgel through her hair.
Dillon is also brilliant as the sleazy detective you love to hate, drugging Magda's (Mary's neighbour) dog so he stops growling at him, proving he will stop at nothing to win Mary's affections.
Lee Evans brings his physical comedy to the film as a pizza delivery boy who masquerades as a crippled architect to try and woo Mary.
Overall, a must see and one that's good to dig out when you haven't seen it for a while, especially at this price!
Summary: Hilarious, well cast classic.
