Thesis (DVD)

Description: Genre: Crime & Thriller - Thriller / Theatrical Release: 1996 / Director: Alejandro Amenábar / Actors: Ana Torrent, ... more
Thesis (DVD) ... Fele Martínez ... / DVD released 11 March, 2003 at New Yorker Video / Features of the DVD: Colour, DVD-Video, Widescreen, PAL / Alejandro Amenabar's first film Tesis has impressive restrain for a debut, as you might expect from the man who went on to make Open Your Eyes and The Others. It's also the most intelligent consideration of the urban myth of snuff films seen onscreen in recent years. Ana Torrent is a priggish young student writing a thesis on violence in movies and finds out more than she wants to know. From the opening shots of her fascinated attempt to see a suicide victim mashed on the Madrid metro to her ambivalent involvement with Chemo (Fele Martinez)--a sinister nerd, obsessed with collecting dubious videos--and her flirtation with one of their principal suspects, Torrent portrays a traditionally plucky heroine along with her darker, more complicit and self-destructive side. As in his later work, Amenabar achieves maximum terror with minimum effect--dark rooms, gazes averted from torture we never see--because of his rich sense of the complexity of human character. What terrifies us here is the sense of our own demons. On the DVD: the DVD, which is presented in a 1.85:1 letterboxed video ratio and has Dolby Digital sound, comes with optional English subtitles, an intelligent, if slightly earnest documentary about the making of the film, a filmography, the theatrical trailer and a review article by the excellent Roger Clark. --Roz Kaveney

Thesis (DVD): My names Jock and im going to die (834 words)

One fine Sunday evening, having finished work I was extremely tired. I had been out the night before and got only about 4 hours sleep before going to work. That evening I decided I was going to get home, cook dinner, watch a DVD and go to sleep. So I get to the rental shop and realise that there are no English speaking films that I particularly want to see. However, my attention is drawn to the dramatic cover of 'Tesis' (Thesis in Spanish). I didn't really read the back cover properly but thought it looked interesting and spent my hard earned 99p on renting it out for the night. I cooked my dinner, made a couple of phone calls to friends, ...  Read the complete review

Upcoming Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar nicely fills in the gap we've got waiting for Argento to make a new film with this little beauty of a Euro-thriller Thesis. She goes to her tutor Professor Figueroa (Miguel Picazo) to help her try and get her a film that couldnt be shown on TV becasue of graphic nature and violent content. He goes away to find a tape and starts his search in the schools film archives, he soon finds a suitable tape but dies while watching it. Angela finds his body and ...  Read the complete review
