The boy has suddenly become a huge Thomas fan. I have no idea how this has happened, it just seemed to come over him over night and now he is constantly asking for 'choochoo'. In the space of a couple of weeks we have accumulated several Thomas toys and also this DVD. The Mrs chose it as she is Christmas mad and she likes any excuse to watch anything with a Christmas theme. When she saw this on Amazon for £4 she bought it right away.
Thomas the tank engine is a huge hit in our house and I remember loving it when I was a kid. I can see why he appeals because it's always a cheerful show and the adventures are really tame. I do wish they hadn't changed the theme tune though as I love the original one!
On this DVD you get just under an hour of festive episodes. Sometimes on children's DVDs when they are Christmassy you may get 10 episodes and only 2 of them are festive but on this they all are much to the Mrs' delight! There are 6 episodes in total which doesn't sound like a lot but trust me after 50 minutes of this you are desperate to put something else on! These episodes are:
1. Thomas, Emily and the Snowplough
2. Don't Tell Thomas
3. Keeping Up with James
4. Skarloey the Brave
5. Thomas' Frosty Friend
6. Henry's Lucky Day
In one episode Thomas gets stuck in a snow drift and whenever the boy watches this he looks completely shocked by it and is mesmerised watching him be rescued!
I have sat and watched this with him a couple of times, every day he requests to have it on but I manage to put him off. When we watch this I find it is rather tedious, it is definitely a DVD aimed at kids and not their parents too. I know most cartoons are like this but give me Peppa Pig any day!
The boy loves it though and that is what matters at the end of the day. The episodes are tame they include things like Thomas looking forward to delivering Christmas post and looking at the village being decorated for Christmas or Thomas getting stuck so needing help in the snow.
It is nice to have a DVD with just Christmassy episodes on and I can see us watching this on the run up to Christmas every year!
The graphics and sound on this is rather basic, it makes you feel like you are watching the original episodes and not the more modern one. It is very simple however it still captures the attention and imagination of the boy so it just shows that there is something special bout Thomas that does draw children in.
This is not my favourite kids' DVD but the boy certainly loves it and wants to watch in constantly so it would get 5 stars from him but I'm being mean and taking away one star because it's rather dull for adults too!
