About the Film

The basic story is about a Mexican village that is being plagued by bandits and they are looking for someone who will fight back for them. Basically think of the Magnificent Seven plotline and you are along the right lines.

They send a delegation to find them some gunfighters and come across a film of the Three Amigo’s who play the part of western gunslingers who rescue towns etc. However the Three Amigo’s is really a Hollywood production and three hard done by and now out of work actors (played by Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short) and is a silent film production.

However, never the less the Mexicans find the Three Amigo’s and ask them to come to their village to protect them, however the three amigo’s think that they want them to perform a road show of their act with El Guapo who they think is a leading actor in their village and accept gladly.

However upon arriving at the village they find that in fact they now have to put up a fight against the bandits who actually kidnaps the mayor’s daughter in response for them seeking help. It then all rests on the shoulders of the 3 Amigos.

My Opinion:

Three Amigos is a classic comedy which is part written by Steve Martin. Although it was filmed back in 1986, it is still funny and well worth watching today.

Now I admit, that if you read my plot outline above, then you will really be thinking why is this film funny. That is really because I have left out all of the funny parts of the film and just concentrated on the basic plot outline, mainly because film humour never works when you write about it so you will just have to watch the film to find out exactly why it is funny.

However moving on, why do I like this film?

Firstly I would say that the choice of cast is just excellent. I love Steve Martin and his films and in 3 Amigos he is as good as always. But it is not just about Steve Martin, rather you also have Chevy Chase and Martin Short and the combination of all three really gives you loads to laugh about while really enjoying a great film.

Obviously the plot is familiar to anyone who enjoys Westerns. After all the classic film The Magnificent Seven follows this plot and really this is just an excellent spoof on that same film and is worth watching. The scenes when the 3 Amigos first meet the Bandits and realise that it is all real and they could be killed is excellent. Obviously this film is not going to win any Oscars considering it is more of a spoof comedy but it is well written and well directed and really enjoyable.

Some words for anyone who does not like crazy comedies, etc, then I would recommend that you do not bother to watch this film. You really do need to enjoy Steve Martin films and / or spoof films or you will not enjoy this film. Equally if you cannot stand any Westerns (like my wife for example) then this might also not be the film for you as it is based on a Western theme.

Another nice thing about this film is that as far as I can remember it is suitable for most people (aged around 12 upwards). Obviously it was filmed back in 1986 so most of the bad language etc that is in today’s films is missing.

In short, I would recommend this film to all as an enjoyable film that is well worth watching time and time again.
