THX 1138 (DVD) ... Duvall, Donald Pleasence ... / DVD released 13 September, 2004 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Director's Cut, PAL / George Lucas's fascinating, almost art-house, film just took a quantum leap into the digital future. Never has the world of THX 1138 looked as bright, clear, and antiseptic as it does on this remastered version. It is equally impressive how far Lucas and the camera crew push the widescreen 2.35 aspect ratio, particularly on a film that emphasizes minimalism. For those that fault the film as being "soundless," prepare yourself for a shock. The new "THX enhanced" THX 1138 sports a newly remastered DTS audio track that enhances every wonderfully subtle, ambient sound of Lalo Schifrin's soundscape. Complaints are likely to be aimed at the restoration. As many assumed, the newly restored (and retitled) THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut underwent a few CGI alterations. In one aspect, the computer graphics are stunning, they're not excessive, and they don't take anything away from the film's storyline. In some aspects the CGI scenes bridge some empty gaps. However, the modern effects do look a little out of place in comparison with the rest of the film. Though a futuristic sci-fi film, THX 1138 is still very '70s in its look and feel. When the newly added scenes appear, it is pretty obvious what has been added. Yes, the purists will cry "Blasphemy!" but in all honesty those new to the film may not notice the differences, and most viewers will probably not care. THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut DVD set contains pretty much everything you could ever want with regard to the film. It includes the new documentary Artifact from the Future: The Making of THX 1138 (30 minutes) as well as the original production featurette Bald (8 minutes). There is also the excellent 63-minute documentary A Legacy of Filmmakers: The Early Years of American Zoetrope, featuring Zoetrope founder Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, John Milius, and Walter Murch. The DVD's informative and entertaining commentary is a combination of separate tracks by George Lucas and co-writer/sound designer Walter Murch. Though not an action-packed thrill ride, THX 1138 is nonetheless a very interesting, meditative film that hits a lot closer to our home than a galaxy far, far away. --Rob Bracco

... George Lucas. THX 1138 (Robert Duvall), a nuclear-production-line worker, is torn between his job as a worker in a dystopian government system, and between his roommate, LUH 3417 (Maggie McOmie), who has consciously decided to stop taking her sedative-like drugs, meaning that she can once again experience feeling, such as sexual longing and pleasure. It's already apparent from this short blurb that THX is still an influential film, having no doubt influenced Kurt Wimmer's 2002 action film Equilibrium. The film...more

Premium Review THX 1138 (DVD): THX 1138! (277 words)

Rating:

THX 1138 is strangely one of those little known sci fi films that may not be quite as influential as Blade Runner, Alien, Terminator, or 2001: A Space Oddysey, but it's an extremely well assembled film, all the more notable for its raising lead star Robert Duvall into the limelight prior to his work on Francis Ford Coppola's mob classic The Godfather (and it's no coincidence that Coppola produced this film), as well as being the very first feature film of Star Wars creator George Lucas. Premium Review Buy more and be happy (170 words)

Rating:

This remastered release of THX1138 contains some extra CGI footage added by director Lucas that really adds nothing much to the original film. However the bonus disc in the package includes Lucas's original student version of the film and that is worth the price of the DVD alone. The remastering in addition to making the film look a lot sharper has also tidied up the sound quality of the film giving sound designer Walter Murch's EFX ("What's wrong?...buy more and be happy"...much sampled by the techno fraternity) extra punch. The central plot of the film (man against the system)has been covered in variations by other writers but it is the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review THX 1138 (DVD): THX 1138 - A look at the present? (621 words)
by - written on 07/02/01 (Very useful, 19 readings)
Rating:

THX 1138 is a film that came from the clever mind of a man that also invented the 'Star Wars Universe'. The film itself is set in the near future where humans are almost homogenous and are happy to take mind altering drugs to supress their natural instincts and to conform to a society that expects only hard work. George Lucas was a clever man with this film, after his cult success with 'American Graffitti', he created a film that could either be watched and thought of as 'scary' or when looked into more deeply could be regarded as 'terrifyingly thought provoking'. The acting within the film is of a fairly high standard, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Before Star Wars there was THX 1138 (247 words)
by - written on 26/10/00 (Very useful, 31 readings)
Rating:

I suspect Star Wars fans are more likely than anyone to come looking for this title, methinks they will be disappointed. THX 1138 is one of the bleakest cinematic views of the future ever made. The entire population is taking mood stabilising drugs, to make working at meaningless and repetitive jobs more tolerable. Personality impaired robot cops patrol looking for non-conformists to bring into line. Perhaps this IS an accurate portrayal of the future after all... Our hero, THX 1138 by name, just like Winston Smith in 1984, develops a personality, stops taking his medication, succeeds in getting himself involved in an illicit affair and desires to ...  Read the complete review
