Entertaining but has it's flaws (Tin Man (DVD))

Advantages: Good recreation of a classic idea Disadvantages: Some poor acting It started off well and I was really getting into it, but then as soon the companion characters were being introduced it went downhill. They had no charisma, there was no good connection or banter between them and there were a few poorly delivered lines by Alan Cumming (Glitch) and Zooey Deschanel (DG - the main character). There were a couple of little naff lines in the script aswell, so that didn't help them. After being initially impressed I wanted to give it a chance to improve again, which thankfully it did and I enjoyed it quite a bit. That is, most of it improved. Zooey's performance unfortunately seemed to get worse - there were times when her acting was very weak indeed, some of the worst I'd seen in a long time. Really strange though, as I've seen her in things before and never thought twice about her acting ability. She's always been very natural and believable. Well, nobody's perfect I guess. The actress who played the evil sorceress was superb though, easily outshining everyone else with her performance. To be honest, she alone kept it worth watching, she was very entertaining throughout. The story is completely different to The Wizard Of Oz and there are lots of new ideas and twists - so anyone concerned that this is just the same old thing rehashed need not worry. There were moments when the special effects looked very budget, but most of the time they were absolutely fine and to be honest it didn't bother me in the slightest. This isn't a blockbuster movie after all and I got what I expected. It was a good, imaginative fantasy and I really liked the theme tune at the start which got me in right mood. Overall, my family and I did enjoy it. It isn't anything spectacular and I've seen far better TV movies / mini-series, but I'd say it was still worth my time. If you do like watching these sort of budget TV movie things, like I do, then you should definitely check out 'Voyage Of The Unicorn'. It's the best one I've seen. It's style is nothing like this - it's more approachable for younger viewers, but as I said (typed?) if you like watching this sort of thing generally, then I highly recommend that one. Oh and 'Gulliver's Travels' with Ted Danson, that one is fantastic aswell. Summary: I would definitely recommend renting rather than buying |
