Titan A.E. (DVD)

Description: Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy - Science Fiction / Theatrical Release: 2000 / Director: Art Vitello, Don Bluth, Gary ... more
Titan A.E. (DVD) ... Goldman / Actors: Matt Damon, Bill Pullman ... / DVD released 09 April, 2001 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / A visual knockout, Titan A.E. is an ambitious animated feature that combines traditional animation, computer-generated imagery and special effects in the service of a science fiction adventure plotted with narrative conventions familiar from Star Wars and Star Trek. Credit directors Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia) and Gary Goldman with crafting a vivid, convincing look to this deep space saga, which conjures some stunning images: a tense opening sequence climaxing in the destruction of Earth; a watery planet where delicate but deadly hydrogen trees float; joyriding in a starship while pursued by playful "space angels"; and a nerve-wracking journey through a lethal maze of massive ice crystals each qualify as mesmerising sequences in any film context. What's visually stunning proves intermittently stunted on the narrative front, however. Orphaned when the evil Drej atomise Earth, protagonist Cale (voiced by Matt Damon) must journey across space to unlock the mystery of his late father's final project, the Titan spacecraft, in a test of faith and filial identity that echoes Star Wars. The Titan itself ultimately poses a cosmic potential familiar to admirers of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Comical sidekicks (Nathan Lane, Janeane Garofalo, John Leguizamo), a sultry love interest (Drew Barrymore) and a roguish mentor (Bill Pullman) all verge on the generic, narrowly redeemed by dialogue from a writing team including Buffy the Vampire Slayer-creator Joss Whedon. It's likely that Titan's target audience of young males prompted the filmmakers to walk a tightrope between softer family features and more violent, hard-edged anime. Although it's brief bloodshed and coy nudity stops short of more adult terrain, younger viewers might be unsettled by the violence. Young teens will find the proceedings tamer than the video games and anime fantasies that have influenced it. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

Crowned Review Titan A.E. (DVD): Not suitable for thirtysomethings.. (1019 words)

Being a gentleman I gave up my Saturday night on the Northampton tiles (sorry girls!) to look after my favorite lady - my little niece Eloise. So, if you're babysitting you obviously have a child at hand so you need a movie to watch, and as I am that fair minded guy I let her choose. She is only two and when I asked what she wanted to see she gurgled something like cartoon, counting it out on her fingers, which was the only excuse I needed as I quickly extracted Titan A.E. from that pile of free films you get in magazines that you haven't yet stuck in your DVD. I finally had an excuse to watch a boys cartoon! If 'grown ups' are allowed to watch those things from Pixar ...  Read the complete review

When you think of feature length cartoons most people would instantly think of Disney. But Titan AE is a cartoon brought to you through 20th Century Fox, and is a real treat of a cartoon to watch. It has a more adult feel to it than Disney cartoons, it has a more real feel to the film, rather than the Disney kind of fairy tail feel. ~~The Cast~~ This film has got a very good cast; it seemed to attract some of the best actor and actresses in Hollywood to lend their voices to the characters in the film. The actors and actresses that appear in this film are; Matt Damon, Bill Pullman, John Leguizamo, Nathan Lane, Janeane Garofalo and Drew Barrymore. All of ...  Read the complete review

It isn't often that an animation is sexier than those voicing it, but in 'Titan AE' this is the case. Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore are far more interesting as thier beautifully animated screen characters,(I suppose it beats good make up and a nice period setting). This is a classic tale of an orphaned hero, teaming up with a gang of outcasts to save the world, although in this little sci-fi number, it is not 'Earth' that they are fighting for, as the A E of the title stands for 'After Earth'. This band of interesting, sympathetic and often comical, renegades, fight the baddies, through a story full of double crosses, space-chases, ...  Read the complete review

There were quite a lot of bad comments about this film, but it is actually a very good experience. It is a fantastically animated space cartoon, with some better acting in it than people can sometimes do (emphasis on the ‘sometimes’. It is about a spaceship, sent from earth as aliens destroyed the planet, containing all that is needed to start off the human race again. The maker of this machine left a map for his son, which only he can activate, with the help of one of his fathers mates. So once the map is activated, it’s time to work out where in the universe the map corresponds to and then off to find the Titan spaceship and discover what it ...  Read the complete review

Oi! Dooyoo, this isn´t a Kids movie, whaddya mean cos its a cartoon it is, ah OK shan´t grumble any more - but its not just for kids!, OK peeps I admit it - I cashed in my dooyoo miles to buy the DVD of Titan AE from Amazon, it arrived yesterday morning and the movies actually not bad! Now then you see, why should I be so anxious to watch a cartoon, well I am a big kid after all, but mainly because of the talk of how well animated this movie was thanks to the amount of CGI used in making it, and to watch the movie you can see theres a lot of work been done here, but I digress a quick look into what the movies about shall we? I think we shall. Starting ...  Read the complete review
