Advantages: Good animation
Disadvantages: Poor storyline
In a journey that begins after Earth ends, a rebellious teenager named Cale embarks on an adventure through space to find a legendary spacecraft, the Titan, which holds the secret to salvation for the human race. With the deadly Drej aliens close behind and betrayal from within, Cale must completes his mission to find a whole new world. Titan A.E. creates amazing moments in the sophisticated computer animation used to relate a sci-fi story about humanity struggling to find a home after Earth had been destroyed by a superior alien species. I was absorbed in the visual effects with no sense that I was watching a cartoon. Matt Damon captures the mood well in the lead role of Cale, and witty and engaging voice portrayals elevated many of the peripheral comic characters. However, it does have a poor storyline. Though menacing enough the Drej have no personality and no clear motive for the pursuit of human destruction. Why the Earthlings have become a threat is never sufficiently developed and explained. The film leaves questions behind. One problem with the film is its several different animation looks and styles. It uses state-of-the-art CGI extensively for both scenery and spacecraft, and for the most part looks impressively realistic. But CGI has its limitations - computers have a far easier time representing hard, flat, and consistent surfaces than random ones. Toys and spacecraft are easier for CGI to draw than human figures, hair or skin. That is why the characters are pencil drawn animation. And to be honest it works well but had the characters been computer animated it would have been better. If you're into comics, sci-fi or some form of graphic design then you should watch this.
