Advantages: some good funny bits

Disadvantages: Weak plot at times, daft

This has to be the daftest film I have seen for some time. I have watched it many times before but never sat through the whole thing, the reason for this is hubby. He sits and laughs at the film before the funny bit happens or will tell me where to watch as something is about to happen in the background and it drives me mad.

The brief plot for this film is centred around Nick Rivers who is the latest singing sensation in America, he is along the likes of Elvis with his songs and his dances. He is invited to Germany to sing there in order to keep the peace but things go wring for him when he gets the blame for something he did not do.

Nick is sent to prison where he tries to escape but as he is doing so he meets an inventor who has been kidnapped so he can built an ultimate weapon. Nick makes his escape and after doing so he meets Hillary who is looking for her father. When Nick tells Hillary he knows where her father is being held they team up in order to rescue him before he completes the weapon. They do enlist help and the consequences are quite daft and funny. But will Nick and Hillary rescue her father in time?

The storyline for this film is quite good if you take it with a pinch of salt as there are a lot of hole sin it. I know it is a spoof but I think a slightly stronger plot may have helped this film slightly, but saying that it is still very enjoyable to watch and easy to follow. Val Kilmer takes the lead role in this film and I was god smacked when I realised who it was as to me he was Batman and I would have never believed he would lower himself to such a stupid character. I do admit that he does have a good voice and he can actually dance, I did question whether he was actually singing and I was assured by hubby that he is. He does do a good job and at time she came across as very naive and shy which is the opposite of what would expect in a superstar. He managed to pull of the jokes and gags which he was given and they all seemed to come naturally from him.

Hillary was played by Lucy Gutteridge and I think she too did a great job and she worked very well with Kilmer and I enjoyed the chemistry the two had. There were a lot of supporting actors in the film and they all did good jobs and managed to give the film a little depth. The addition of Omar Sharif was good and I think he played a very funny small part in the film.

The humour throughout the film was mixed, it varied from a spoken joke to something comical one of the character would do. I think you have to watch this film slightly differently from others as in others we tend to watch the main characters where as in this one we have to watch the background as there is always something daft going on. I liked the way it was at times daft, I mean a cow wearing wellies would be spotted a mile off, wouldn't it? But it all just seemed to fit and make the film what it was.

The music was very varied in the film, from the rock and roll which nick Rivers was singing to the Jaws theme and then we had a little bit of classical. Think the wide variety did suit the film and it all fitted in very well for the parts in which it was used. There were some effects in the film but they were nothing to speak of as at times they were truly awful but I think that this what the makers were going for and they did actually make for some very funny scenes and I don't think this would have been the effect we would have got if they would have made the effects too good.

The DVD which we have does not have any bonus material but this is not a great shame for me as I am not a fan of bonus features as I feel they spoil the film at times. The running time of this film is 86 minutes and I found this to be a very appropriate length as any longer and I would have lost interest in it. The certificate is a 15 and I do agree with this as there are some scenes which are inappropriate for younger viewers. This DVD is available for just a few pound on places like Amazon and EBay.

I am going to recommend this film as it is daft and funny and Val Kilmer is great in it but I felt slightly cheated by it thanks to Hubby telling me when the funny bit was about to happen!

Summary: Nick and Hillary have to rescue her Dad before he biluds the ultimate weapon
