Advantages: A fine comedy and thought provoking film
Disadvantages: None
The movie is about Harry Doyle and Archie Long, two gangsters who were sent to jail in the 50's and were sentenced to 30 years. They were convicted of trying to rob a train. Since then no one had tried to rob a train.
Harry is played by Kirk Douglas, and Burt Lancaster plays Archie Long.
This a story about them coming to terms with a world that they no longer recognise or feel part of. They are a throwback to the 50's where the world has moved on.
The movie gets off to a good start as Harry and Archie go to a bank to collect their prison cheque and get caught up in a robbery which they end up preventing.
To make matters worse the duo then find out they can not spend any time together because they are both convicted felons, Harry is sent to a retirement home and Archie is sent to look for a job.
Not content with what is happening to them they decide to pull of one last job by robbing a train. The film is both funny and thought provoking.
Both Lancaster and Douglas give fine performances and the dilemmas they face are believable. I found the film enjoyable to watch and it is nice to see a film where every other word is nor a four letter swear word.
In my opinion the film did not receive the credit it deserved and this is a film, that as a family you can sit down and watch without fear of a scene of nudity or gross violence may appear and scare or embarrass you or the kids.
Maybe not the best film i have seen but i would watch it again.
Summary: A good family film
