Toy Story (DVD) ... / DVD released 06 November, 2000 at Walt Disney Home Video / Features of the DVD: Animated, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--you smile at the spell it puts you into and are refreshed, and not a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic" and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing as it reawakens the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts (namely Knickknack and Tin Toy, which can be found on the Pixar video Tiny Toy Stories) illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humour--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney. Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favourite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar "For the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

... quickly. The premise of the film is about toys that come to live. It has a magical air to it, a fun and warm feel, without being overly unbelievable or over the top. We're introduced to Andy, a young boy who's birthday is rapidly approaching. In his room is a large selection of toys, but these are no ordinary toys. When Andy's away, the toys come out to play! Amongst the toys are some great characters, from Little Bo Peep, a slinky dog, etch-a-sketch, Dinosaur and various others. The central focus is on Woody, a cowboy...more

Toy Story is one of my all tme favourite anmated films, it is very funny with some great characters and also at the tme the animation techniques used were pretty new and very exciting. Produced by Pixar the film tells the story of a little boys toys wh come to life when he is asleep and not in the room, by far his favourite toy is a cowboy called Woody whose voice is provided by Tom Hanks however one birthday he receives a new toy, a spaceman called Buzz Lightyear who is voiced by Tim Allen. Buzz has a big ego and is a bit of an idiot however Woody is really jealous of the new toy that his replaced him in his owners affectons. The reason for Buzz ...  Read the complete review

1995 was a seminal year for Disney for it was the year that the immortal Toy Story was released. Following in the groove that "Tron" had so neatly eked out, Toy Story went where no movie had gone before. It was the first completely computer generated animation feature film with spectacular results! Now part of Disney folklore, Toy Story was a co-production of Disney and Pixar studios and released with an element of trepidation. Tron had not been the hit anticipated and the creators worried that Toy Story might fail in a similar fashion. They needn't have worried. TS is all about the premise of what would happen if a child's toys really ...  Read the complete review

It was once said by some flailing celebrity that the best cartoon or kids show is found enjoyable to people of all ages. The type where parents won't dread watching it with their offspring. These are generally few and far between and there are only a few that come to mind instantly. The Simpsons is loved by all, possibly more so by the older generation as they will actually understand the jokes, instead of just giggling whenever Homer says "Doh!" which seems to be the case with sprogs under 12. Duckman (what?) is aimed towards adults, and succeeds as it is currently developing a cult following with it's intelligent, albeit Americanised humour. ...  Read the complete review

I had this film on VHS (remember those?!) when it came out, which was over 10 years ago now, but it's kept it's appeal as a beautiful Disney CGI classic. Toy Story was written & directed by John Lasseter, who has had much experience in CGI and family films as a director, producer and writer, so he seems extremely multitalented. Films he has worked on include Cars, Toy Story 2, A Bugs Life, Wall-E, Ratatouille and Finding Nemo. Rated certificate PG, this film is family friendly. Although it may appear to be a children's film, I would argue it's suitable for all ages, small & big kids alike. It's a very popular film, one which will be ...  Read the complete review
