Traffic (DVD) ... 2007 at Boulevard Entertaiment / Features of the DVD: PAL / Featuring a huge cast of characters, the ambitious and breathtaking Traffic is a tapestry of three separate stories woven together by a common theme: the war on drugs. Bold in scope, it showcases Steven Soderbergh at the top of his game, directing a peerless ensemble cast in a gritty, multifaceted tale that will captivate you from beginning to end. Utilising the no-frills techniques of the Dogme 95 school, Soderbergh enhances his handheld filming with imaginative editing and film-stock manipulation that eerily captures the atmosphere of each location: a washed-out, grainy Mexico; a blue and chilly Ohio; a sleek, sun-dappled San Diego. But Traffic is more than a film school exercise. Soderbergh and screenwriter Stephen Gaghan (adapting the British TV miniseries Traffik to the US) seamlessly weave the threads of each separate plotline into one solid tale, with the actions of one plot having quiet repercussions on the connected narratives. And if you needed more proof that Soderbergh takes unparalleled care with his actors, practically all the members of this cast turn in their best work ever, the standout being an Oscar-worthy Benecio Del Toro as the conflicted moral conscience of the film. Traffic registered eight Oscar nominations (winning four, including Best Director for Soderbergh). --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com

Crowned Review Traffic (DVD): Del Toro Moves Out Of Traffic and Into The Fast Lane (602 words)
by - written on 24/01/01 (Very useful, 29 readings)
Rating:

Steven Soderbergh’s compassionate, compelling dissection of the narcotics industry is a story told in three parts. In Midwest, prosperous Cincinnati, Judge Robert Wakefield takes his new post as Drugs Czar, oblivious to his daughter’s blossoming freebase hobby. In California, a society wife with a young son, an airy La Jolla home and lifelong country club membership, suddenly finds her lfiestyle stripped away when she discovers that her wealthy husband has been arrested for drug smuggling. And in Tijuana, a Mexican cop gets squeezed between his duty as a police officer and the lure of cartel backhanders. Director Steven Soderbergh builds up a ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

--------Introduction-------- The film is directed by Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight/ Erin Brockenvich) and contains many high profile actors. This was a film nominated for some 8 Oscars and eventually winning 4 including 'Best Director' for Soderbergh. It is a film largely based on a mini series 'Traffik' which was on Channel 4 over 10 years ago. More information on this is contained on the 'Extra Features' of this DVD. We will be reviewing the Region 2 DVD version of the film. --------What's the film about: The Storyline-------- There are 3 separate interrelated stories with 3 distinctive looks. Each has an overriding theme - that being ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Traffic (DVD): Better second time round (1233 words)
by - written on 25/07/04 (Very useful, 40 readings)
Rating:

This film won a lot of awards when it was released, 4 Oscars and 5 Golden Globe Awards, and was also in receipt of much critical acclaim. The first time that I saw this film I was disappointed and certainly did not feel that it deserved the praise that it received. However, having recently watched it for a second time I have changed my opinion somewhat. The film deals with the drug problem in the United States, however where it differs from other films in this genre is that it chooses to tell the story though three interlinked mini stories that serve to portray the impact of the drug trade on suppliers, users and those in place to prevent the trade. There are ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Out of sight, out of mind? (817 words)

There are some who argue the so-called 'war on drugs' can never be won. In Steven Soderbergh's superior 'Traffic', it can be seen that minor victories are achievable, but at what cost? The cocaine industry is worth billions of dollars each year. With inadequate laws and widespread corruption, the trafficking of the drug from Mexico to the United States is surprisingly easy. After repeated failures, an independent 'drugs tsar' is appointed to improve the country's ability to combat the illegal drug trade. Whilst still finding his feet, Robert Wakefield (Michael Douglas) devises a three-pronged strategy focussing on rehabilitation, ...  Read the complete review

Traffic (DVD): Not as good as (112 words)

I didnt think Traffic it wasnt good enough as what people said it was. The plot seemed very convincing allthough. The film was very dark and very very boring. I thought that because of the price it must have been good but I was wrong. I only watched it half through and hated it. It didnt get better kept telling me that. The only advice i can give to you is that it is very Boring and not really worth it if you have to about £24.00. Far too Western. If there was a Sequel i wouldnt buy it. but may be its me - I aint in to action that much!. ...  Read the complete review
